: diesel sound
skull246 02-20-2009, 09:57 PM have had this truck from april 08 how do u if something is wrong with them it seems to make a different noise every day just can't figure them out like a gas engine l know what a noise is if l hear one in them, but a diesel always make noise
BigBlueChevy 02-20-2009, 10:07 PM Diesel noise is good.
EPA is bad
A new noise everyday? I would hope not. Diesels do make laot of noise. Thats just there nature.
Torque454 02-20-2009, 10:08 PM I used to hear strange noises too. Its likely just the noise of the engine. Each cylinder is going to hit a little harder or softer than the others even if its not much, moreso when it is cold. Temperature effects the sound. That is probably what it is. If there is something badly wrong it will be obvious.
skull246 02-20-2009, 10:31 PM thanks its just that if a gas motor makes noise there is something wrong, and this thing always makes noise so l can't tell

Been drinking? LOL.
Diesels....especially 6.5's are noisy. Mine sounds like a cement truck! I love it.
Jodean 02-20-2009, 10:40 PM i was told the other day that my 6.5 was really quiet for a diesel.....
then agian its only got about 15k on a goodwrech motor and i run wvo all summer.
BigBlueChevy 02-20-2009, 10:51 PM the 6.5 is quiet. I don't like how quiet but I absolutly love the truck. I've heard it all th time how quiet it is. You get used to it.
I think torque454 hit the spot. Makes sense as mine makes noise here and there that seems off.
skull246 02-21-2009, 02:04 PM so is there any noise l should here that would be bad because l don't drive it like it should l baby it, because just not sure so your saying drive it like a truck and don't worry about the spark knock sounds
skull246 02-21-2009, 02:22 PM just watch some video on different 6.5 and wow they do make alot of noise but mine sounds the same so l guess l won't sell it and start driving it
BlueBurby1 02-21-2009, 05:50 PM if you have spark knock sounds you have a problem, since the only knock you should be hearing is diesel detonation...these things don't have spark plugs ;)
they sound like a dying gasser, it's the nature of the beast...my neighbours hate when i start my 6.5 and even worse when i start my 6.2...

JMJNet 02-21-2009, 08:25 PM There are some gasser dodge or ford trucks that are louder than my burby.
Joe Palmer 02-21-2009, 09:56 PM First the first week I owned my first diesel i wanted to run every time I started it. I just KNEW the bearings and everything else in it was ready to blow. Now, I just look forward to the rattle of a good working engine waiting to do its job.
ercaduceus 02-21-2009, 10:00 PM Yes they do sound like they are going to blow up when they get started. Compared to an IH 7.3, they are relatively quiet. However, newer diesels are getting to the point that you almost can't tell its a diesel. In short, I it OK for your 6.5 to make noises. You will know it if she starts to have an injector knock or rod knock or stuck valve etc.
Torque454 02-21-2009, 11:36 PM Yeah i frequently was convinced mine was ready to come apart a few times. I just "thought" i heard strange noises. I do have a wierd noise that i only hear on the first start of the day right after it starts. Kinda sounds like an old quincey air compressor starting up, or a gas motor running with one of the spark plugs out of it. Makes a couple of those lil popping noises right after it starts and then its ok. Only happens on a very cold day, first start. Doesnt sound metalic tho so i dont worry about it, i kinda suspect its the dead vac pump thats still on the truck. Anyways, i digress. I think youre worrying for nothing, like i said i was the same way right after i got mine for a couple of months. Now i know its just the nature of the beast. Was hard to tell if it was just the diesel noise or something else, but if it was something else it would have come apart by now.

Take a video/sound from your cell phone or a friend that has a cell phone in front of your truck, running with the hood up and post it back on here.

98z71keith 02-22-2009, 12:02 PM sounds good to me! I love the distinct sound of a 6.5L...In my opinion its one of its best features...there is no mistaking it for anyother motor.
BlueBurby1 02-22-2009, 12:16 PM sounds good to me too mmmmm DIESEASEL
smackzed 02-22-2009, 02:13 PM i think what your hearing is exactly what you should be hearing. "dieseling" on a gas engine bad, dieseling with a diesel engine good
trapp2012 02-22-2009, 03:32 PM Just turn up the radio. Lol. Sounds fine to me.
skull246 02-23-2009, 10:54 AM thanks everyone now that l got to listen to some different ones on here and you tube l feel better now that mine is just as noisey :)
