: Is the 2006 LLY really a derated LBZ?
DMaxSnax 02-20-2009, 09:00 PM What is the simplist response to the question; "Is the 2006 LLY the same block and turbo and lower compression ratio (smoother motor) than the 05' LLY?
I am looking at an 06' LLY that has EFI live 70+ hp custom tune. Is it basically the same as the hotor 360 hp LBZ?
Thanks
irish yankee 02-20-2009, 09:03 PM I would not know but I can guess,06 lly is the leftovers from 05. ???
good question,I would like to know also
DrHolliday 02-20-2009, 09:25 PM yes, it is mechanically the same engine as an LBZ.
JC1843 02-20-2009, 10:45 PM Just the tune is different-- in fact some have had a dealer reflash the ecm to a LBZ tune with good results.
irish yankee 02-21-2009, 01:41 AM on a 06 lly what is the redline on the tach?
tampa1020 02-21-2009, 03:54 AM on a 06 lly what is the redline on the tach?I believe that mine is at 5000 or so.. Its the exact same as the LBZ when i buy parts for mine it says LLY/LBZ on everything.
My buddies 2wd crew cab LBZ is not much faster if any than mine.
bballer182 02-21-2009, 12:34 PM There have been countless threads on this very issue. YES the 06 LLY is Mechanically the exact same in every way and the LBZ. The only thing different in the OS and engine cal, which, can be updated by the dealer or anyone with EFI live to the LBZ calibrations....
DMaxSnax 02-21-2009, 01:04 PM Thanks guys very much.
If you read the big posting in the FAQ's section it is NOT clear at all. It keeps making reference to the 2006 Duramax 6600 engine; all the while not being specific about which tune..............or whether the LLY has the same smoother, lower compression, stronger block skirted motor as the LBZ.
I will go ahead and pursue an 06' truck with either motor! Thanks again.
DMaxSnax 02-21-2009, 01:06 PM One last question. While looking at these trucks for serial number, will the 06' LLY still have a #2 in the 8th position of the VIN? Or will it be a "D" like the LBZ???
tampa1020 02-21-2009, 03:26 PM One last question. While looking at these trucks for serial number, will the 06' LLY still have a #2 in the 8th position of the VIN? Or will it be a "D" like the LBZ???
Yes it will still have a 2 in the vin.
JC1843 02-21-2009, 03:26 PM Yes, the 06 LLY will still have a 2 in the 8th position.:)
DMaxSnax 02-21-2009, 03:51 PM So an 05' LLY with a "2" in the VIN will be a different motor than the 06' LLY with a "2" in the VIN....................GM should have given them a different name or just called all the 06' trucks LBZ's.............don't ya think?
bballer182 02-22-2009, 02:09 PM would have made more sense but that's the way it is...
d_maxxx244 02-23-2009, 12:20 AM im very interested in who you have heard changing the tune from the dearler cuz i have called four or five dealership and they think im on something

well i guess you have to be in good with someone cuz it's done all the time. you have to be able to talk to a tech who actually knows something. maybe try a Medium Duty dealer. those techs are for real.
Christopher06 02-23-2009, 05:20 PM Automatics are LBZ engines, Manual and heavy duty are LLY in 06
tampa1020 02-23-2009, 06:09 PM Automatics are LBZ engines, Manual and heavy duty are LLY in 06They also made the LLY as automatic for 06 just pay attention to the shifter if it has the tap shift buttons it is an 06 LLY/LBZ

Our software allows users to reflash their ECM from an 06 LLY to an LBZ and vice versa.

Ive heard Ross say that it's not really a good idea to change OS's via EFI because when GM does it they actually take all factory options into account and sometimes functionality of a certain option may cease to work properly.?.?
is that true?

Our advice to users is to firstly look at the reasons why you want to full flash in another OS. For many vehicles and their owners it's not necessary, (ie. LBZ OS to LBZ OS) but there are instances where it can be very useful (ie 06 LLY to LBZ or 01 LB7 to 02-03 LB7). Once that decision is made, and a user decides to full flash they need to mitigate the risk of problems.
You need to make sure that the file you full flash into your vehicle has the same options that your vehicle has. Climate control is the biggest single issue - people who full flash a non climate controlled vehicle as a base tune into a vehicle that does have climate control MAY not have climate functionality anymore. More often than not it's an intermittent problem which makes it harder to diagnose. ie. the problem may appear 2 or 3 months after the tune was installed, especially if the tune was installed months before the AC was used.

I see. So there pretty much would be no reason for me to upgrade to the newest OS then right? im on 6128 and there are like 7 OS's after that but 6128 seems to be the most popular one out there.
