While I was working on my truck this weekend I thought I would check things out, Is the fluid in the master cylinder supposed to be brown? It reminds me of burnt tranny fluid :( My pedal does get hard on long hauls or hard pulls....

after 14 years my 87 never had brown fluid

Brown clutch fluid might mean water contamination...

However, if the clutch fluid is black then that's normal. GM uses carbon black in their hydraulic seals in the clutch and that carbon black will 'leech' out into to fluid with use. There was a Tech Bulletin from GM concerning this (actually it was for the Corvette, but it still applies).
