: What is this thing they call a duramax
12valvefreak 04-10-2005, 02:30 PM ok i am new to this site but was looking through the cummins section to find out what running straight pipe on the 05s is doing to horespower and mileage but there were these guys talking about a duramax and how they just try to lure in cummins and then spank em, . well i am new to this whole 600 series but i have a 96 3/4 ton 4x4 five speed with over 250,000 miles on it that i would pit against a duramax any day of the week. i would do it with a 40 ft trailer if i coudl finally get the tranny to hold up finaslly quit blowing head gaskets. not sure about these duramaxs but the ones ive seen arent much to talk about much less own. if any one could help me out on the exhaust on my 05 ive heard a little of both ways so any help would be appreciated.:grd:
Joey D 04-10-2005, 07:42 PM There are many fast D max trucks out there, just like the Cummins. If you have not been beat you are not looking.
12valvefreak 04-10-2005, 10:08 PM i have been looking and i dont doubt that there are plenty of quick duramaxs but i just havent found one. and all the ones i have found are very disappointing. by the way do you have and what are the specs.

rickGo to www.nwbombers.com (http://www.nwbombers.com/)
some good cummins enthusiasts there as well as a fellow Texan (Don M)
Oh, 40' trailer.... how about we do that on the Kootenay Mountain Pass?
Loser buys the beer!):h
And I can help you change the headgasket.
On your 96 why is it blowing them out? What mods have you done?
370's?
4000RPM GSK?
Valet Switch?
it should be a 180 pump in your truck or possibly a 160 pump.
Fuel Plate#?
Full forward?
Turbo?
C'mon man we need more info to help ya!
BTW on 5 speeds you need the EEP 5th gear nut mod to keep the trans from grenading at higher than stock HP levels and then do an SBC Con OFE Clutch... do the 13" and plate upgrade... well worth it... or go with the Haisley DD setup.
FWIW
That's about the limit of my cummins!
BTW, have you Timed your pump recently?
CTD's do not take well to too much advance in timing... which could be why you are losing headgaskets
12valvefreak 04-10-2005, 10:41 PM ok i havent done much to the truck just bypass waste gate, ground fuel wheel, 9 speed splitter, injectors, propane, freightliner clutch, 4" exhaust, a few other things. the deal with head gasket everytime i was at about 30,000 gross would blow gasket finally got some studs in there and stopped that but keep losing nut in tranny, ill look into that. this thing dynoed at 440hp and 1100 ft lbs, before propane. ran a dissapointing 16.4 in 8th mile but brole tires loose in third and couldnt get it back and blew head gasket so didnt run again. hadnt been back since propane and stud bolts. got another few questions what about the exhaust on my 600, and have you heard much about putting the 24 valve heads on a twelve valve?

9W3-HD 04-10-2005, 10:49 PM 9 speed splitter is slowin ya down.
12valvefreak 04-10-2005, 10:51 PM dont use it much but is an awesome feeling when it goes from 2l to 2h and roasts the tires. i mainky use it for hauling it frops my 70moh rpms to 1650 and increases fuel mileage 4-5 mpg

Go to www.piersdiesel.com (http://www.piersdiesel.com) or www.powerbypoole.com (http://www.powerbypoole.com) or www.buddahpower.com (http://www.buddahpower.com) All offer a stage 3 12 Valve head ringed and ready to go that will outflow a 24V head.
BTW, Ditch the propane. go for more fuel instead. P7100 'stoopid' pump.
You will never go back to LP again... also look into Twin Turbos.
You will need O-Ringing:ro)
12valvefreak 04-10-2005, 11:02 PM thasnk for reply have you heard any pros or cons on the 24 valve head?
Terrain Twister 04-11-2005, 12:34 AM Guys with the 12V head seem to get better mileage.

RPMS.... their double coil valve springs do not like 3500+
IIRC Haisley has a solution for that if you want to change, as does www.piersdiesel.com (http://www.piersdiesel.com) for a P-Pumped 24V
ToddPSD 04-13-2005, 09:48 PM 12valvefreak, I noticed you like in Breckenridge TX. My family has a lake house there. I'll run my little ol Ford against ya, not to wild done to it just tunning.
