: 2006 LLY getting new heads

My 2006 LLY is getting new heads put on it. I was "burning" coolant, or at least it was disappearing and I didn't know where it was going. They were just going to put head gaskets on, but now they decided to install new heads. How concerned should I be about this? Truck has 46k miles. What is going to happen at 92k? Should I ask for another 100k warranty? Have you ever heard of anyone getting one? Thanks.:banghead:

I'll reply since you're the only other one besides me not getting ANY responses...

If it was me, I'd rather have new heads. As long as the deck isn't damaged new heads means completely flat mounting surface to attach new head gaskets to, which means no gaps and therefore no more leaking. If your heads were warped or cracked or anything new gaskets would have been like putting a band-aid on a broken leg.

Take the new heads and gaskets and be happy, but if you can beg, plead and barter for an extended warranty(beyond the 100,000) all the better.

Good luck and bump for more replies...

How much coolant were you losing. My 2005 LLY has about 45K miles on it and I just had to top it off some (noticed it was a little low in the tank).

I doubt there was anything wrong with the heads but if they want to put new heads on let them. Good luck with getting free extended warranty. I can't see that happening.

They told me at the dealer that the coolant lost would increase to the point where it would start to white smoke. They have had the truck two weeks and three days. Over the weekend, found it out in the parking lot with the hood up and the top of the engine exposed:eek::eek: I was real happy about that one. I called Chevrolet cust serv and they told me they had never heard of such a thing, I got pictures!

Today they called, they have it back together but #1 is misfiring. They said they were going to swap injectors to see if the problem followed the cylinder where they put it.

Come on Toyota, build a diesel, I'm waiting in line!

My 06 lly is leaking coolant exterally at the head gaskets. There is no way the I will let the dealer touch it until the warranty is just about up. There is staining at the heads but not dripping on the ground.

Having been a former Toyota owner don't go thinking they are perfect but head gaskets at 46K is in-excuseable if you ask me as are tons and tons of other problems that are brought up on this site. I'm not very pro-GM these days especially since "we" lent them money and guarantee "we" will have to lend them more!

I can't find any other thread, someone please help if you know of one.

DIC displayed low coolant again after new heads installed. Got truck back, sounded like Turbo was in the cab with me. Mechanic blamed it on my only aftermarket part, the K&N filter. I said no way sir, with respect. The tore the engine apart again, EGR coolant case leaking, or at least that was what I was told. Heard a good valve tic the third trip, he said he missed number 8 valve lifter tune.

My son was driving my truck, called me and said "your coolant light is on dad". Truck went back to the a different dealer, said #8 return line was disconnected, bad fuel smell. He said he fixed it. Then he told me that the oil was overfilled, and the coolant was low. I then put the two together and asked "is the coolant going in the pan?" I dont think he put it together until I told him. It's going somewhere.

Got truck now, they changed oil, filled coolant, put dye in it and asked me to drive it until the DIC comes on again. I am getting madder by the day.

I don't tow anything except a camper two or three times a day. That's it. Please, anyone who has had an engine replaced, which the dealer mentioned today, please let me know how it went. Did they really do it, what engine did you get? Nervous and mad!

there is a bulletin for techs to check the egr cooler first. This is because it's a common leaker....

the heads got replaced - assuming because the surface check showed them out of specs. Gm does not allow head resurfacing, so basicly once the head is pulled it gets checked and i believe the magic number is .004"

for the question on whoever had an engine replaced.... which one did you get ...

you will get exactly whats in your truck, just a working one!

I'd take a new engine over new heads any day.

hopefully the tech took note on which injector goes in which hole... or at least programmed each number to the proper cylinder....

i'm a dealer tech, so any other questions you have regarding this ... if i don't respond - pm me.

I drove the truck for the first time since bringing it home to work on Thursday. Got at work and smelled like glycol pretty bad, looked underneath and there are drips along the rear of the engine (bell housing) and I get to watch it drip to the ground.

Never leaked when it first went in, just used it. Now it leaks, probably doing both. If 4 thousands is the magic number, I guess both were beyond this tolerance? You would only think it would have been the one where piston #8 is, i understand that is where the heat build up is.

Got to drive it two hours on Sunday for a motorbike race, taking a gallon of coolant with me. Truck goes back to the shop Sunday night.

I will keep posting if anyone is interested.

My truck is still torn down to the short block. They (GM) are saying now that they cannot get head gaskets for the engine. They must be serious, gave me a 2009 gasser with 45 miles on it to drive. They say it's mine until mine gets repaired.

Leaks one more time, new engine time. I sure hope it leaks.

6 weeks without truck now. Gasser makes you really appreciate diesel when towing the John Deere diesel around. Maybe Kensaw(sp?) could build engines for GM?

No, I don't think they did anything to the injectors besides make one return line leak real bad when they put it together wrong, for the third time.

EGR cooler was fine, so they say.

Hoping for cracked block. GM wanted to know if I wanted to trade, I said sure, give me 40k and we will talk. :D

My 2006 LLY is still in the shop. Say they cannot get head gaskets for it, and they are attempting to get gaskets out of CANADA, I guess they are assembled there??

Government Money (GM) better come up with an anser soon, or I want a new engine....

Wish me luck. They said it will be done this week. I hope it leaks in the dealer lot.:shake:

The dealer called me today and told me my truck was ready. I asked them if they drove it around for a while to see if the alarm came back. He said no, and the engine feels strong. I took the keys, moved my junk from the loaner to my truck, started the diesel and I heard something that just didn't sound right. A Knock now. So I got out the truck and stuck my ear down by the fender well. Something just sounded funny. I looked down at the DIC and I just couldn’t believe it. "Coolant level low". I went inside and told the asst. service manager, he came out to look at it and made the comment that if it was burning that much it would be white smoking. I told him that it never did do this. Called GM customer assistance and told them I would accept nothing less than a brand new engine. She told me she would contact the dealer in the morning. Week 6, camping season is starting and I don’t have anything to pull with..

sorry to hear that. I can't believe folks are so inept. If they give you a new one I would definetely stay clear of that dealer. I mean they are out and out retarded and certainly have no professionalism at all.

****New engine**** Finally admitted that they can't fix it and they have ordered a new engine. Five day delivery and two days to install, so I should get it in a month.:)

Once the decision was made to put in a new engine, they got nicer. Got a good person (Ms. Adrian Burt) from GM customer service. She even calls me now to give me updates.

The 2009 loaner 1500 Gasser I have now has 2k miles on it.

Can't wait for my truck!:D

I got new heads on my LBZ and the dealer put aftermarket gaskets in it so i could get the truck back. I also opted to have mine warrantied under GMPP instead of the OEM warranty. In all the dealer had my truck for 4 weeks and 3 days. But it runs awesome again and seems to have more power than before. It has alot more nut than he other LBZ that i have. This is quite a hassle you are going through but at least they are trying to make good on it for you. New engine for that truck is not cheap no less the labor they have already had to pay out.

New engine in, all okay thus far. Allison running 150-160 degrees, 70 ambient. I never noticed this before unless I was pulling. Any comments?

Engine strong. I feel that I have done my part of the 10 billion dollar Gm loss this quarter!

Thanks to all for your thoughts. Talk to GM tomorrow to see what they will offer for my "time and trouble". I'll take anything. ;)

This stuff happens. Some problems are hard to find. At least they made it right and didn't slap you with a 4k bill after having your truck for three weeks........

I do hate that they release trucks that still have problems. They gave me my truck back when it was firing on 6 out of 8 cylinders. Worst part is that it was a leaky aftermarket fuel tank. If you want to feel mildly better read this: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=300844

BTW, My 06 LLY has 46k and doesnt burn or leak any coolant at all.

Donovan,

I feel for you but you really got to watch "truck houses" . You have to go on a reputation because many are just parts swappers and anybody could do that. This is not the only Titan Tanks I have heard of that leaked. I keep on struggling with an aux tank but I'm not giving up an inch of my bed. I tow a 5'er and I need all the inches left for firewood, coolers, generator. Needless to say I will buy a Tranfer Flow if I can ever part with the money.

Can't stand the part about the coward huddling in his office. Give me a break!
