: Head gaskets-injectors
leeekblad@msn.com 04-10-2005, 12:06 PM I just had all of the injectors replaced at 114,000 miles in my 2001 Duramax. I haven't picked it up yet, but supposedly the extended injector warranty is going to cover it.
It has also been pukeing coolant out of the expansion tank. It never overheats but does constantly loose some coolant. Service rep. said it is a head gasket or bad head. Estimate to replace both gaskets is $3000. This seems extremely high. Is there something special about this engine that makes this job difficult? Doesn't seem like rocket science. Does anyone out there have hands on exoerience or info on this job.
I expected this engine to go at least 200,000 miles without major problems. I thought that with Isuzu's input, GM would turn out a good engine. I also felt that with the bad experiences that GM had with their previous diesels, they would have made sure that they got this one right. Apparently they are continuing in their tradition of short lived diesels sold at an exorbitant premium.
dmaxalliTech 04-10-2005, 12:09 PM 3k is in the ball park for replacment. I would say book time to be in the 35-40 hours range plus ~600.00 for parts.
Where are you located?
tophog 04-10-2005, 12:11 PM $3K to replace a head gasket!? :(
OC_DMAX 04-10-2005, 01:16 PM Too bad they did not do the head gasket job when they replaced the injectors. I'll bet there is some common steps in the two processes that would have lowered the cost to you.
This engine is not cheap to work on, that is for sure.
leeekblad@msn.com 04-10-2005, 04:01 PM I am in Green Bay Wisc.
dmaxalliTech 04-10-2005, 09:29 PM If you get no place with your dealer, I can work with you on getting it done for less if you dont mind a drive around the lake
PM or call me if interested.

ag4gt 04-11-2005, 08:57 AM I have had the same thing. Around $3K is about right. The thing about doing the head gaskets is that almost none of the parts are reusable. As far as a good engine, I am thinking of getting rid of my DMax as soon as the warrenty runs out. I have about $6K run up aginst the warrenty in a year and a half. I am not very happy with the engine, the truck yes, but the engine is a problem.
leeekblad@msn.com 04-11-2005, 09:16 AM Still looking for more specifics as to how hard a job is it to replace the head gaskets. Are any special tools required. I'm leaning toward buying the shop manual and having at it. I have worked on lots of engines in my lifetime and have the time. Any input is much appreciated.
dmaxalliTech 04-11-2005, 10:48 AM It can be done without any special tools, albiet they would help some. Biggest thing is just how intensive a job it is. Nothing really "hard" about it, just alot of bolts. Allow 3 full days at least to complete. Replace every seal every fuel line you disconnect, head gaskets of course, new head bolts are required as well. Lower valve cover gaskets are reusable with no problem. Injector fuel/return lines are critical on torque and correct assemble.
ag4gt 04-11-2005, 07:33 PM The tech that did mine said he would never do another one without pulling the engine.
leeekblad@msn.com 04-11-2005, 10:23 PM I raised a little hell with GM custoners no service. They tried to pin their refusal to help on the dealers tech. I then called the dealer and raised hell with them. GM has now agreed to go 50% on the job. I will probably have them do it. Still not happy with having all of these problems at this mileage. Sounds like a good truck would be a Cummins in the GM. Will probably go back to gas next time. Thanks for all of your input.
Bigwheel 04-11-2005, 10:45 PM The price we pay to run with the General ........Censored
Or is the General running us ????:blahblah:
I know the fuel pump is running us......
Sorry to hear the bad news, keep working on them, hopefully they take care of you....
I won't waste anymore valuable words here, must conserve on server space....:muahaha:
Boo Oliver 04-14-2005, 03:13 PM I have the same problem with my 01 DMAX 111,000 miles on it they told me the cost was going to be around $3100 -:tif there was nothing wrong with heads. They changed both head gaskets and all of the injector sleeves they also told me that GM would pick up half of the bill. Just talked to the service rep. told me that it was the left side head gasket between the cylinders in the middle of the head he told me they have 3 diffrent head gaskets for just the left side and also that Izusu has changed the head bolts for the left side only! Every thing for the right side is the same parts no change. Kinda sounds like GM has seen this problem before and is tring to fix the problem at owner's expence!!!!!!!!:help2:
dmaxalliTech 04-14-2005, 06:34 PM Boo... sounds like the dealer is taking you for a ride...
THere is three differnet head gaskets, but not to fix a problem. Its for clearance issues. The head bolts are the same they have been since 01.
leeekblad@msn.com 04-14-2005, 06:36 PM Thanks for the information. I will use it in my future negotiations. My engine is beibg pulled to do the job. I will post more information as soon as I get it.
dmaxalliTech 04-14-2005, 06:37 PM Pulling the engine for headgaskets????
Wow...
leeekblad@msn.com 04-14-2005, 06:42 PM I assume this is their first time doing it. They said they checked the times to do it and there wasn't much difference. A earlier post here says a tech who did the job with the engine in wuold pull it if he had to do it again.
