Ok I know this has been brought up before, but one question I have. The message started popping up around 2 months ago. I'm out of my basic warranty so this is an out of pocket on my 03. I've seen the TSB for this, but other than a nuisance it hasn't been a big deal. Well today it actually turned off the light on my pushbutton selector for a few moments(never did it before). Any chance I'm doing any damage to my internals? If so, how likely is it that the encoder mentioned in the TSB? Since my Pred won't read that deep, any other way short of a dealer visit to find out pull up the code??

Wasn't their an issue with the switch itself?

Rick,
My '02 does it sometimes. There are a few threads that have dealt with it.
This one found a few causes.

yes after I did some searches here most of the time its points to the encoder sensor. Eric sells the part for $80 or so but a few guys have had other issues. Since I don't have a Tech II I can't scan for the 'deeper' codes. I don't want to throw money at fixes, without knowing what the problem is.

Yeah, definitely put a Tech2 to it first......

Its possible you wont be able to pull codes with a tech -2 because it may not communicate with the module. For starters, go out and pull the TREC fuse from the UHFB with the key off, let it sit about 5 mins then reinstall and see what happens, it should reset everything and be good to go for a while

well the message isn't always there, I drove around 50 miles today and it never showed up, sometimes it shows up 2 times in a trip. Since it's intermittent I'm leaning towards the encoder but I'll try your trick first to see if it wipes out a memory that may be there.
