: Who has had bad oil???
akdiesel 04-09-2005, 07:30 PM I am just curious. Who honestly has had engine problems due to the oil they have used?
Now Take into consideration any leangthy oil changes that you failed to react on that may have caused the engine problems, or any oil that you may have used that was not the correct viscosity.
I personly use Royal Purple in my vehicles. And I have seen a lot of replies or topics from people stating that the oil they are using is working great for them.
Did anyone use a cheap brand (<.99 cent)of oil in there motor and had problems?
coyotekid 04-10-2005, 01:35 AM I personally feel that you'll get along fine with cheap oil in the short go...it's pretty unlikely that you'll have a catastrophic, SUDDEN engine failure from using cheap oil in my opinion.
But, I would be willing to bet that higher mileage engines invariably show much higher wear from the really crappy cheap oils. And this isn't to say that oil must be expensive to be good--but I'm also saying that just because an engine runs doesn't mean it runs well!
Bottom line is: Do whatever you feel comfortable with--as with most things in life, there's undoubtedly more than one way to do things. I know how I like to operate, but that doesn't mean I should tell anyone else how to run their operation.
Man, that was a long post to a short, simple question, huh? Feel free to tell me to shut up at any time!
Buckeye03 04-10-2005, 01:42 AM I agree with CoyoteKid, do what you feel comfortable with. I have a buddy that has 310k on his 6.5 diesel, all original without any major work. Used Shell Rotella T the entire time. Getting him to switch oils is going to be a tough sell.
coyotekid 04-10-2005, 01:53 AM Exactly Buckeye! And why should he change oil? He's had great luck with a very reputable oil!
Not everybody has great luck with Chevy trucks either! We're never going to all drive the same thing, use the same oil, or believe exactly the same things.
I guess I'm just a little tired of some of the pissing match bull**** that's been slinging around here on the forums lately. I'm always glad to lend my advice to beginners based on what works well for me, but I don't claim that something I recommend is "absolute." What works for me might not work worth a damn for you.
KINGSMT 04-10-2005, 08:18 AM I have used both Pennzoil and Mobil Delvac and the difference that we have found on engines that were brought in to my fleet (previous ownership) is the wear factor plus how clean the oil passage ways, galleys, etc. are. I think alot of user choice is what someone else may have said to inspire you to buy, select,or believe in! Quality oils are better but to know the difference is to read the test results and see the field application. Remember their are only two bases in petroleum oils, it is all in the additive packages thats were price comes to play. This is America, we are about choice, That why Baskin-Robbins makes at least 31 flavors, one for almost anybody!!!
akdiesel 04-10-2005, 12:33 PM I agree with all of you.
Once you start with an oil and you do the normal maintance, chances are you are going to stay with that oil for a while, unless like mentioned you get inspired by someone you trust to switch.
It is just kind of interesting to hear people comment on oils good or bad and still not really have anyone say "Yeah I had a motor sieze up due to poor oil".

Did you see any differences between the two oils you used in your fleet?
KINGSMT 04-10-2005, 04:00 PM We did note some different conditions. In our Heavy Equipment which used to be strictly Caterpillar, oil consumption would be up on the Delvac. The only problem with that statement is sometimes the daily use would be different, ripping rock, pushing pans or up on the cut. These all play with oil consumption. I feel that we had longer drain intervals on the Pennzoil in the long run. We also never purchased bulk oil, only 1 gallon jugs to ensure clean oil. (always looking to pour into jug out of a drum, jug might be dirty) plus inventory was easier to account.
