Hey guys
Recently I got myself a 2005 8.1 L chevy. Im looking to put an intake on it here real soon and was wondering what you all thought about k&n, AEM and Volant? As of right now im leaning towards K&N. Let me hear your opinions! Thanks Kyle

Well... Neither they really don't do much for the price they sell them at but if you must anything but K&N or anything with a filter you have to oil. the oil if you over oil tends to cause issues with the MAF sensor etc. you want to find something with a dry filter

All of those intakes.... Suck.

Leave the intake and exhaust alone and spend that money on a tune...

496 cubes sound awsome with a good exhaust. With a little work you can build you own intake that does much better than the ones you buy for a fraction of the cost. I wish I still had the one I used to have. Congrats on yours.

i would put a drop in aftermarket filter in the factory box, and then mod it using the info on kennedydiesel.com. it works just as good as an aftermarket kit.

ok so no CAI, but curious why everyone says no to K&N, I;ve always heard there the best and just be careful to not over oil it.

I have the Airaid CAI on my 8.1, and would not do it again. It changed the tourqe curve and took away some of the low end punch (right off the line). Go with a drop in for the factory box for around $40- and save yourself some grief... and dough!

I got a K&N and like it. You can tell a difference I guess. To far ago to remember. If your going the tuning route you WILL need a CIA as IAT will play a HUGE role in dialing it in. And they are always too high.

The only downside to getting a K&N is they allow alot of shit to get into your motor specifically silicone particals. I did an oil analysis and it was a little high on that. Notice none of them advertise excellent filtering abilities? Its all about airflow.

Do a search on here about air filter comparisons. I forget where its at but I think Amzoil got a very good rating. So whatever is the best in that category you can get an intake tube (or if your handy with a TIG do it yourself) and add the cone style filter yourself after you fab up a mount for the MAF sensor. I have my bottom plate removed too so I get fresh air from the ground up ( you can see the ground from the air filter cabin). Next up is fabbing a diverter from the bottom to force air up there. Just make sure the filter box is completely sealed off from the motor bay so it doesnt suck any hot air and cause any more KR than normal.

Go with a true flow, uses stock air box to shield the filter from engine bay heat and debris. Has a gauze type filter with a foam outter. Oiled filter are ok, but just dont have the attitude if a little is good, then alot is better. Stay away from K&N (never trust a filter you can see daylight through). If you want a good dry filter only try a Amsoil EaO filter.

K&N is a great air filter, but only if you need massive air flow and plan on rebuilding an engine every year like us dirt track guys.

Ya know Im not one to advertise for K&N but Ive had it in there for over 3 years and with everything else Its fine. I clean it regularly and although it does allow slightly more "dirt" into the engine you cant beat its airflow. Thats what these motors need more than anything is air. So unless you got one and it ruined your motor and you can prove it dont go off assumptions. Im not bashing here either Im just saying make you decision by what people actually have not what theyve heard as we all have done that before.

K&N dropped my truck 2 tenths in the 1/4 mile. Never had a problem with them.
