Amazing...this is the second letter I have received from GM regarding the following:
2006 Sierra/Silverado LBZ motors - Allison Transmission with (IMO), very likely DEX VI in them....
In extreme conditions, your 2006 model yr GMC Sierra may have limited or no trans fluid flow through the trans cooler after sitting for an extended period (overnight I guess is considered "extended"). If the elevated idle mode cabin heater performance option (wow, what a mouthfull), is operative and the engine is allowed to idle for an extended period of time of 15 to 30 minutes while cooler flow is limited, the trans fluid may overheat, resulting in trans damage and subsequesnt failure.
Quite the notice.
Well since I first got the truck feb 07 @ 35k (miles), I have gone to a deep Alu pan, added a Transgo Jr. + a Banks PDA & changed to Transynd...I'm a bit concerned that if I let those clowns touch this unit with the suggested TCM reprogram...They'll ****** things up royally..!!
Truck runs like a 'deere"............
I have no faith in the Dealers at all....do all my own service and just have a bad feeling when I walk in there for whatever it is I need 'cause I can sense the 2 X 8 about to be shoved up my A$$....
your comments: pro or con...pls.

I got a similar letter from GM asking me to take the truck in to have something reprogrammed. I believe it's just that programming, nobody is going to be making any hardware changes to the tranny. I figured if something does go wrong with the tranny then it's one less thing GM can try and blame me for, "well sir you didn't get the programming done even though it has nothing to do with your current problem but we are not going to honor the warranty because of this" didn't notice any difference afterward.

I have not gotten any letter like that but i will say that i will not use the dealer anymore for work on my truck. Back when i purchase my truck i did not have it long and put after market wheels on it. I ran them for about 5000 miles and the truck develope a sqeek up front. Took it in to the dealer and they said it was nothing. So a week later i go to rotate the tires and two studs are broken. I call them and say that we have a problem, when you all took the tires off you put them back on to tight and broke these studs. They say they never took the tires off. I was like i took my truck in there for a noise up front and you all did not take the tires off to look at the brakes or anything else. They said they did not. So that was my last time a dealer or there so called mechanics work on my truck i will do everything myself.

I have not seen a letter from GM on this either. I do recall someone posting a recall for that issue on here awhile back. I question my dealer about it and they said it only applied to the northern states and Canada trucks. However they did tell me it should not be a problem here and not to use the elevated idle, but to plug the truck up instead at night or 4 hours before use when below 25 degrees F. They also said the problem was occurring at temps below -20 F when using the elevated idle( for warmup) and yes the trucks had the wrong trans fluid in them and was causing some kind of check valve to stick with the cold fluid. I think the fix was replacing or removing the check valve and changing the fluid to a colder climate fluid. I guess its like using different oil when in extreme cold or hotter climates.

Pluggin your truck does squat for the Tranny...just shows you what your dealer knows. The plug-ins we use here in canada will keep your engine oil at a normal temp of around 60-65F. That does not translate into warmer temps for your trans fluid.
When possible and required, I will always plug mine in...but in the AM after a night of -35C temps, I'll start it up and look at the PDA (Banks)...the Trans Temp will be somewhere in the 2-3F range while the engine is already at 65F. Best bet I believe is using Transynd for the transmission. It is recommended by Allision for the 1000 series of transmissions...I believe them..not GM.
I hear ya on not going to the stealer...I always feel like I got a 2 X 4 up my butt when I leave...either from having to pay way way too much for an item or just the BS I get on certain issues.

Steakman you are absolutely right that plugging the truck up does not warm the tranny up. I was just stating what I had been told by a dealer. The dealer did advise me to use Transynd in my trans if I was going to be towing heavy alot and if the truck was going to be subjected to temps below 0 degrees F. Next time I change the trans fluid Transynd will go in because from what I have seen and read it's better for the Alli. I agree that most of the dealers know very little if anything about these trucks.

I believe I read a while ago that this was going out to the far north owners only,I don't think the northern US states were even included because we don't get to the extreme lows they get up there.I think it was because of how thick the fluid gets at those temps and doesn't flow well untill warmed up a bit, high idle makes it worse starving the trans of fluid. My guess would be it stops high idle from kicking in untill the trans fluid temp gets up a bit.

I had the reprogram done last year. They did not change any hard parts, just the computer. It felt like the trans was learning for a while after. I guess it just gets less aggressive with the trans warmup. If it's any consolation my trans still howls at -42 C.

There is a big tread about this issue its just an issue when the temps are real low -40+ IIRC. All you have to do if you don't want it to go to the dealer is disable the high idle during those temps. At least until the trans has warmed up enough the the fluid will flow through the cooler. There just going to program it so if the HI is on the trans won't go into warm up mode until the fluid heats up some.
