Has anyone had a problem with the "new" dualmass flywheel? I got one of the first replacements on the second design flywheels and I might have 3000 miles since and pulled no heavy loads, so I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the signs of the new one starting to rattle?

no not yet I only 2500 on the new replacement have being doing some heavy towing lately and it is holding up. When I run the truck hard with the juice on it cries a little:D

So far so good. Pulled around 19K total on the "new" flywheel and SBC clutch with the Xcelerator in race extreme mode. Egts around 1600*. No slip and no fun noises so far.

I got my repaced at about 36K, now at 51K and mine sounds like number 3 will be going in really soon. I was making ends meet by pulling a 50ft trailer with 15-22k loads on it for about 10K of that...hmmm...wonder if that had anything to do with it???

I've got 3000mi on my new one, lots of pretty heavy towing and no problems yet.

Looks like I'll be ordering a new flywheel. 106,826 miles on the original flywheel and it's starting to make noise when I push the pedal in. Boy it's nasty sounding. I think the only reason I'm still on the original is because I've only towed a total of 6000 miles and most of that was only 5-6000 pounds.

I have over 30,000 miles on the new part no. flywheel and no problems so far....I do have a high frequency vibration under load about 2,000-2,200 rpms.

I have about 20k miles on the new flywheel plus some pulling a 10.5k 5th wheel...so far so good.

Your case sounds familiar. My 2002 LS first went at 31k, then 50k, and number 3 was put in this week at 70k. Apparently the 2nd unit was the new design, but an IB was issued in Dec. 2004 stating 8 mounting bolts need to be replaced at the same time.
Sure am getting tired of this !!!

Update...I am now at 25k miles on the new DMF design. The last 4k or so has been with a VA 0-70-110 tuner hooked to it.

The other day when pulling the 5er, I was in 4th gear, tuner set to 70 HP and had the hammer down...see how the truck would pull the 5er. Around 2800 RPMs, the DMF starts rattling, not too loud but is noticeable. If the radio would have been on, I don’t think I would have heard it.

On a side note, the VA sure does make a difference in pulling power...especially in the 1600 RPM range and above.

I've had my new DMF in for over a week now. It seems to be fine. I do have a bit of launch shudder.

Thanks for the update....hopefully everything will hold together. The noise you heard may simply be the injection system kicking off the pilot valve. (mine starts around 2600 rpm)

Just a follow up. The launch shudder went away after about 1000 miles. Everything is doing fine.

Second update...family went camping over Thanksgiving holiday. Driving back last night, VA on 70 hp pulling my 10.5k 5th wheel. I had been on the road about 4 hours...pullling a small hill and all of a sudden the tach shot up from 1800 to 3000 RPMs. Yup...the $%*#& clutch slipped. I am getting more and more noise on the DMF when the pressure is on.

Wade...need that single disk setup!!!

OH yeah you should hear mine whine when I get on it with no load behind it on level 3. Sounds about like it going to come apart. I want the new SMF as bad as anyone but don't rush it or you may have problems. But yes Wade you have us setting on the edge of our seats.

D_Farmer,

I agree with you 100%. Don't rush the product, we definetly need it to be right the first time. I don't think Wade would do that to us...would you Wade??? :)

I had the first flywheel replaced at 12k. Just yesterday it started "the noise" again at 29k. I am also tire of taking my $42,000 truck to the dealer for the same repair that in 7k more miles I will have to start paying a $100 deductible every time it goes in for warranty work.

Welcome to the "Place" Wendell. I do not believe the deductible is applicable to the DMF issue. I have not had to pay one yet, have your dealer double check the GM TSB on this. I got 30K out of the last flywheel which was the latest design from GM which was #2...now on #3 but not for long this was just a temporary get me by until SBC sent me revision #4 and FINAL flywheel to test....FINALLY IT IS DONE!! Dynadroit will have these ready to ship....order them now as this first batch will go fast!!
