My g/f and I went out car shopping and pretty much narrowed it down. The dealer did a search in their used car auctions and found one for us. My questions is, about how much do the dealers really pay for these cars(trade in value, suggested retail, etc.)? Just curious, so I know about where I can get the price to. Thanks, Chris

Usually you have to be a dealer to go to these auctions or you tag along with a dealer if they are a friend. They usually have a price in mind for the cars they want before the bidding starts. They all know the book values of these cars before hand and bidding will be determined by the demand for the car.

To me it did not sound like a real auction though. More like a big online used car inventory open to the dealers for whoever puts the first offer in. The reason I do not think it is an auction is because I do not think there was any bidding. The sales person found a car, asked us if it sounded like what we wanted and then he bought it for us to actually see in person and then we will see if we want to buy it. He called it an online auction which is why I called it one, but it sounded like they did not have to bid on anything.

be careful about auction cars, i used to work at a dealership and the cars we brought to auction were only there because we were afraid about honoring our warranty and the cars were beat on pretty hard before we brought em to the auction.
