: Update- Post OEM filter-no start.(Starts Now!)
GMCSLEHD 12-13-2003, 07:44 PM I installed my post OEM fuel filter today ala Lone Eagle (engine mounted Racor). It is a Racor 660 filter head and R60S filter. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Pic (I think Lone Eagle's install-same as mine): http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rm11234/detail?.dir=/Engine+Mounted+Racor+660&.dnm=My+Pictures0029.jpg
When I was done I opened the post OEM bleeder screw and started pumping.
Problem 1: Fuel spraying out from between the secondary Racor filter and head (with the petcock bleeder closed) so I tightened it even tighter--still doing it with enough prime pumps.
Problrm 2: Seems the water bleeder at the bottom of the secondary filter wants to leak, cant seem to get it tight enough.
Problem 3: Truck started long enough to back out of the garage to clean up mess, SES light came on, and now it wont start after repeated attempts.
Problem 4: It's now dark outside and getting cold.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
I'm leaving the OEM bleeder closed and priming till fuel comes out of the secondary bleeder. Is this wrong? What else am I doing wrong?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
I'm getting the feeling I screwed up somehow (I am mechanichal, but not a mechanic).
Any suggestions and input greatly appreciated!

RanaExcavating1 12-13-2003, 08:19 PM IMO you have air between the racor and the pump. If the engine is cold which I assume it is by now,............. pump the OEM primer with all bleeders closed until you cant pump it anymore. Try starting it after that and keep on pumping it after it starts........ as long as you have no loose fuel lines you should be able to get whatever air is in the pump out and keep it running. Good luck and wear a warm jacket!
GMCSLEHD 12-13-2003, 08:33 PM Rana thanks!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I'm going to go try it. I'll report back.

GMCSLEHD 12-13-2003, 08:57 PM Well, it started and I kept pumping, then it died again. Did this a couple times to no avail. The secondary filter head is still spitting when the pressure from me priming builds up (this worries me). I have a feeling this won't be resolved tonight. I'm going to keep trying though. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
I really stink like diesel and my driveway has a nice big puddle and my engine compatment I'm sure is covered. Oh well, that's the fun of doing things yourself--right?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

If the secondary is spitting when you prime with the hand pump, you have found the problem. When the engine starts, and the pump creates a vacuum, you are sucking air, thus causing your problem. You have a bad filter element, gasket or the head is warped. You need to get all those leaks fixed.
GMCSLEHD 12-13-2003, 10:22 PM Pick that makes sense, since Rana's idea works for a minute or so then it just seems to run out of fuel. So I guess it's back to stock for now and I'll try to get Racor or the place I bought it from to send me a new head and filter. If that's the problem, it would figure, me and Murphy go way back.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

Victory Red 12-13-2003, 11:02 PM I know the Murphy thing, I initially moved mine on a warm saturday afternoon. Took out the plug to prime and lost the plug in the engine compartment http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif the place I bought my parts is open till midnight 5 nights a week buy only weekdays.
As for priming the best way I found to prime was open the secondary pump till it no longer 'spits' but just kicks out a stream of fuel. Close it go to the OEM, open it, you'll like find a little air there as well, pump again until a clean stream, than one more time back to the secondary for a quick bleed.
Another possibility is to recheck the line from the secondary to the high pressure pump. Visibility there is poor and it's possible your connection isn't as good as it could be and becoming a leak point.
Lastly, it could just be a bad gasket on the filter. You could try removing the filter inspecting the gasket for tears, cracks, divots in the material.
The best way to check for small leaks is the soap test. Put a small amount of liquid soap(like kids stuff for blowing bubbles) and see if you can detect a leak anywhere at the connections/filter head/hoses.
My guess at this point with you looking over your system several times at this point I'm sure a bad filter and/or head.
When doing things of this nature and having problems I find that I can better find mistakes/issues by starting the end point(in this case the line to the high pressure pump) because it forces me to think in reverse and cocentrate a little more.
On edit: I just re-read your post, you've got leaks at the filter head. That just shouldn't be, either you're missing gaskets or got a bad batch. I think you need to disassemble your setup and inspect all the rings make sure they're not slipping or improperly seated.Edited by: Victory Red
OC_DMAX 12-13-2003, 11:05 PM Make sure you have the beveled gaskets (both ends of filter) installed as shown on the side of the filter can
GMCSLEHD 12-13-2003, 11:10 PM Victory Red,
Thanks for answering my PM. I agree, I'll recheck everything tomoroww when it's warmer. At this point though, it's looking like a bad filter or head or both. Thanks again to everyone for their input.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
On a side note, I never knew how messy diesel was, I mean that stuff gets EVERYWHERE.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

Victory Red 12-14-2003, 10:39 AM You should see the stains it leaves on asphalt. Anyhow sorry you had so many problems, it really sucks when a project should be relatively straightforward and then someway it all goes south.
Anyhow, even with the minor setback, it's worth the extra time and money on this project just for future fuel savings alone.
As for added injector life, well no one really knows yet, I don't think anyone has any serious miles on yet running secondary.
Mines been on since 8k and I'm at 19k now. Never once regretted the decision.
Mackin 12-14-2003, 10:50 AM Problem 1: Fuel spraying out from between the secondary Racor filter and head (with the petcock bleeder closed) so I tightened it even tighter--still doing it with enough prime pumps.
Are you sure you have the right head for that paticular filter ?
Problrm 2: Seems the water bleeder at the bottom of the secondary filter wants to leak, cant seem to get it tight enough.
Was there a o-ring present at the base of the water bleede where it screws into filter ?
Problem 3: Truck started long enough to back out of the garage to clean up mess, SES light came on, and now it wont start after repeated
attempts.
It's unhappy obviously
Problem 4: It's now dark outside and getting cold.Click on image to open in new window

GMCSLEHD 12-14-2003, 01:09 PM Well this morning I put a nipple between the in and out for the secondary (eliminating the secondary from the loop) and all is well--no SES light and truck runs fine even after driving it several miles.
So there don't seem to be any leaks in the plumbing, just between the filter and head. The filter came with the head from a reputable vendor, so I'm sure they're mated correctly. There is actually a bleeder screw (with o-ring) AND a petcock type drain (that seems to leak) on the base of the filter
Got everything washed and cleaned up good after i took the filter and head off (messy, messy, messy), so now I can tke a good look and see why the head and filter aren't sealing.
Again thanks to everyone for their input.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Mackin 12-14-2003, 01:54 PM Put some light grease on the gasket of the filter next time ....Make sure the petcock threads are sealed also ...

GMCSLEHD 12-14-2003, 03:53 PM After taking the filter and head apart, found the problemhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif--NO O-RING (gasket)!! Greg from Lube Specialist is sending me a new filter and o-ring (thanks Greg).http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Most likely that should solve the problem. Special thanks to the person at Racor who was sleeping when they put the assembly together.
Next time I do a DMAX project, the first thing I'm checking is to make sure all the parts are there! Will post pics when complete.

GMCSLEHD 12-19-2003, 10:17 PM What for ya know about that.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Got the O-Ring (gasket) and it works great now!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Here's some pics. I'll post some pics of the lines, etc... tomorrow.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/D7E_SFFnofltr.jpg Edited by: GMCSLEHD

Victory Red 12-20-2003, 04:57 AM Gmcshlehd,
Glad to see yet another truck with clean fuel and good running. It's amazing how one little piece of rubber can save you so much hassle in life(hmmm, that statement affects other parts of life as well http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif)
