: tires for stock rims
2fast2 02-10-2009, 09:32 PM Sorry for this lame question, but I want to make sure before I drop $900 on new Michelin tires.
My 2003 has the stock aluminum rims, currently with 245/75/16 and the local tire store wants to offer me the 265/75/16 for essentially the same price at the stock size. I recall someone saying that the stock rim is 6.5 inches width, and if so, is technically below the range for Michelin's LTX M/S per their web site.
I know a lot of you guys run this size and bigger, but are you doing this on the stock aluminum rims?
Are there any concerns or problems?
I would think that the tire store (Discount) wouldn't sell me those tires if it wasn't OK but I know better than to ASSume.
Please let me know if this is a good idea to go with the 265's.
twinbubba 02-10-2009, 09:57 PM I ran BFG 265/75R16s on my stock rims. They too were rated for a 7" min.
All I can tell you is I only got 30,000 mi. on those tires but that could be due to the face that I didn't rotate them as often as I should have.

2fast2 02-10-2009, 10:06 PM Hopefully I'll hear from someone who used the 265 Michelin LTX M/S tires on the stock rims. If Discount will give me a 50,000 mile treadwear warranty on them, maybe I shouldn't care.
eggsack 02-10-2009, 10:56 PM it is just fine, I ran my truck on stock rims with those very tires with my 3000# truck camper in the bed across this country 2 times with everything I own in a trailer behind it.
First thing I will warn you about is read life. Those tires ride good and handle great, but tread life sucks. About 30,000 tops.
now I got a set of Michelin LTX AT2s last year and got 50,000 out of them and they are a much better tire the the LTX m/s. They were the 265s, I now have the 245s on and I like them better than to 265s for stability with the truck camper and wear.
To each their own, if the deal is good enough, then do it. If you are looking for long tread life, then go with a better tire for a 7500# truck.
2fast2 02-11-2009, 08:52 AM Wow eggsack, I really appreciate your advice. I thought I was going for the long tread life tire, but I'll tell them I want the AT2 in the 245 size and considering how expensive they are anyway, whats a few more $$?
Thanks.
2fast2 02-11-2009, 07:13 PM Bought the LTX AT2s today. Stuck with the stock size. Oh well, its for work not show.
TIM Z 02-11-2009, 07:22 PM Good luck with your tires! 265's would have been fine, Hell my 04 Z71 came with 265's!
I run 285's with no prob on stockers.
2fast2 02-12-2009, 12:00 AM My concern was with the narrower width of the stock 03 aluminum rim pinching in the bigger tire and accelerating treadwear. With different rims I would've gone with bigger tires and it would look so much better. Oh well, it's a truck. I turn the key and it goes.
eggsack 02-12-2009, 11:09 AM I have to say, good choice. My best friend had the LTX M/S on his half ton and got 60,000 miles on them 2 times since 1998. But on these heavier trucks, some tires do not hold up. I found that with my towing and hauling around of say 10,000# gross weight all the time, that the BFG AT KOs SUCK, they wear terrible and the reason why is they use the exact same compound of rubber that they use on the tires for the half tons. Big weight difference.
I like the AT2s and I am on the second set. Also, this may seem like overkill, but the first couple times you rotate them. Do it at 3,000 mile intervals as I noticed it helps them out a lot. I had some odd wear on my first set, and I rotated more often and it solved the problem.
Best of luck and you will find the tires have awesome traction in everything you throw at them and ride like a dream and very stable.:D
Cheesehead 02-12-2009, 11:49 AM X2 on the AT2's And running 285's and no problems
