: Electric help needed
ratlover 04-08-2005, 01:51 PM :wtf:  There hasnt to be something i am missing.
I have a lightbar with a Brakelight turnsignal in it. Its the dual filament bulb for parking lights too. It worked once fine before. My right blinker works on the lightbar, my left blinker flashes both, my right brakelight dosnt work though. Oddly enough all my truck lights function correctly though.
Here is how I have my stuff wired. I soldered my wires onto the wiring running back to the rear of the truck. Then I have a 7 point trailer plug so I can quickly remove my lightbar if need be.
I tested at the trailer plug with the male lightbar end yanked and it functions like how it works with the lightbar hooked up.
I dielectric greased the heck outa everything originaly, I cleaned out all the grease thinking the grease was dirty and it was somehow casuing current to flow(those are the only functions that act wierd, my whirly lights and reverse lights and parking lights all work fine) and the blikers started working normal but as soon as I hooked it up to the lightbar I didnt have my right brake light again and it started blinking both with the left. I wiggled the whole mess also to no difference.
:wtf:  :help:
TIA :)
partsguy662 04-08-2005, 01:57 PM Rat, I'm assuming you wired another 7 pin socket up to your truck....any way you can get the cord back to the oem 7 pin that came on the truck?
ratlover 04-08-2005, 02:08 PM I could pull the lightbar off and get an adapter
I tied into the factory wiring running underneath the cab. Thats what is driving my up a tree.......my truck lights should be fubar also but they work fine weather the bar is connected or not. Correct? I have an isse somewere between the female trailer plug and the factory wiring. Since its tied into the factory wiring I should be back feeding onto it shouldnt I?:damnit1: this is driving me nuts.
I yanked my lightbar and tested the plug and it still was fubar so it cant be in the bar right?
There isnt 2 wiring looms going to the back is there?
Max Power 04-08-2005, 02:22 PM Green - right turn
Yellow - left turn
brown - tail lights.
Hook the ground to the frame to be sure you aren't picking up a wire that tests ground but isn't really ground.
Does your truck have the fifth wheel provisions? If so there will be a bundle of wires in front of the front driver side bed mount. That would be the best place to get the wires you are looking for.
Let me know if you want my # and we can discuss it.
ratlover 04-08-2005, 02:28 PM Duno if I have 5th wheel provisions? I have an 03 2500HD with the tow package.
I wasnt grounding through my ground I ran for my lightbar, I ran a differnt ground and was using a test light. I didnt check my actual ground though(other than to see if it went hot with my turnsignals)
At one time everything functioned fine. A few months ago someone told me my right brakelight on my bar was out and I noticed the filiment was nuked so I replaced the bulb, put on the hazards and looked and everything was ok so I figured I was good. Then I was told my lights were screwy again:mad:
Max Power 04-08-2005, 02:44 PM It's hard to solve without seeing it. Tripple check your ground. Also make sure you don't have your wiring mixed up. Perhaps you got the colors of the wiring on your light bar mixed up.
There are 2 sets of wires that will test as right and left turn. The difference is one is for the truck (Seperate turn signal and brake) and the other is for the trailer (combined signal and brake) So that might explain why you only have brake light on one. Then the other issue could be ground.
ktm2ride 04-08-2005, 02:51 PM The ground is the likely cause. If your ground is open than the bulb gets its ground through the filiment of the other half of the bulb. The bulbs have two hot contacts and one end of each filiment is tied together. When the ground is open it feeds back through the other half and back through who knows what else until a ground is found. Ground the light bar to a known good ground and it should cure your problem.
ratlover 04-08-2005, 02:57 PM Reverse lights(have aux in the bar), whirly lights, park lights all work fine. The bar is isolated pretty well and I dont believe it could chassi ground but I may need to double check that.
So the trailer lights are ran independantly from the truck wiring? I'm pretty sure I am all tied into the trailer wiring becasue I read the colors and tags by the trailer plug and then double checked when I peeled back the insulation to splice in.
Makes much more sense now that its 2 seperate sets of wiring. Everything worked fine for some time, I have a feeling my cheap POS trailer plug I used went to crap and shorted inside there.
I should be able to trouble shoot it now that I know there is a sperate trailer light setup, I will let you guys know if I have any other probs. The fact that my trucks lights worked perfect was what was really throwing me.
THANKS:)
Max Power 04-08-2005, 03:14 PM Also check the trailer wiring to make sure it is not screwed up. There is a possibilty that the trailer light module (not sure of real name) is not working properly. There was a guy who posted here a few days ago that had problems with one of the brake lights not working on his trailer although the turn signals worked fine. That module was the culprit. I also had the same thing happen on a 99 Truck I had.
ratlover 04-08-2005, 03:37 PM Is this moduel the box by the bumper or is it under the hood somewere?
Max Power 04-08-2005, 04:22 PM I'm not sure. I think it is under the hood or dash. I've never really looked for it on the truck or in a wiring diagram.
JRKRACE 04-08-2005, 04:25 PM I had the same kind of problem on my 95 GMC. Turned out to be the adapter that tees off the harness to the trailer plug. My guess its the plug....
ratlover 04-08-2005, 04:51 PM Thanks
max, inbound pm
Diesel Dually 04-08-2005, 04:53 PM I had similar problems when I had a lightbar...
For me, the best solution was to check each wire with a hot jumper I ran from the battery, atleast then you can check each wire independantly...you will need alligator clips and a friend...depending on where you hooked the plug into and if it is a pain to see the bar from where you will be checking the wiring.
I say pull the plug and tap into the wires directly...then use plenty of gasket sealer to keep them waterproof (saw that trick in the back of 4-Wheeler once!)
Keep us updated!
partsguy662 04-11-2005, 11:07 AM Make any headway on this over the weeked, Rat?
Or, did you burn your truck to the ground?):h
Max Power 04-11-2005, 11:18 AM ratlover, I got your message Friday night but I was away from the phone. Let me know if you still need me to call you and when would be the best time. :)
