: Removing the PMD
I want to remove my existing PMD from my IP pump and mount it remotely. My current PMD is relatively new is working OK. I have purchased a heat-sink. Is it possible to get at the PMD screws without removing the intake? I was hoping to get at it by removing the tube that attaches to the top of the intake and runs to the turbo coupling, however I was looking at it and I don't think that will give me the access I need. If I have to remove the intake, will I have to remove the fuel lines from the injectors or can they be left in place.
Thanks
BornReady6.5 04-08-2005, 09:50 AM I think its possible to make a custom tool to fit down in there to remove the torx nuts, but I'm not sure how. I think it involves welding the right torx bit on a piece of flat strap and then using a lot of patience.
I just left mine on in case of a spare. You may have to remove the intake, etc. to get to it.
I'm waiting on a special wrench to loosen my IP, so I know how limited room is in there.
Turbine Doc 04-08-2005, 12:39 PM I could not do it on mine, HO dual thermostat housing got in the way, I'm told it's possible but for life of me could not see how to do it easily. I went with the Heath remote with new FSD and am using the one on the IP as a backup in event Heath one dies, so I can still drive while I wait for him to send the warranty replacement. That is an easy do just a matter of plugging/unplugging the harness.
qwestqaz 04-08-2005, 05:42 PM Get a short cable along with the remote cable, Install short cable to IP pmd, It know becomes your " spare ".
MrTailLight 04-08-2005, 06:39 PM i was able to do it on mine. use a short torx bit, and a wrench to get 3 of the 4 out. with the upper rear still in place, i took a single hack-saw blade by hand and cut the last bolt. worked real easy and simple. took about 15 minutes tops.
Thanks for the replies - Mr. Taillight - did you remove the intake?
customizedcreations 04-09-2005, 09:34 AM I left mine on as a spare as well. I installed a intake mount cooler, and about 3 months later , had a brand new fsd go bad, left me stalled on the side of the highway. Boy was I glad I still had the original one installed. 15 minutes under the hood and I was back on the road again.
:D
Good luck , it looks to be a real PITA:( to get that out, thats the main reason I left mine.

On 97+ & newer with HO waterpump & dual thermostat not easliy done if at all, I tried it and still was unsuccessful even after removing the A/C and dual thermostat housing and upper intake, I got that far saw I needed to fab a special tool and got disgusted, went remote mount, left original in place for on IP spare that I can swap to if needed by harness reconnect, for 97+ carrying a glovebox spare without a remote mount is a waste IMO, this isn't as easy as some portray, definately not a roadside fix; unless someone else has some special insight willing to share how it's done on 97+ H/O water pump engine. I even saw the need to rotate the IP to get better access to the torx screws, which you don't do on a 97+ easily without proper tools.
Taillight did you restore the driver back on the pump or remote mount it, if IP mounted did you replace all 4 screws or just the 3 easily accessed?
MrTailLight 04-09-2005, 02:43 PM i left everything attached, and removed nothing, like the intake. i only had to losen the pump to turn it to get to the bolts. mine is a 94, NON EGR!
Turbine Doc 04-09-2005, 05:01 PM Info I was interested in but wasn't clear on was sawed torx bolt once sawed you have enough to grab the remainder to finish getting it out, another thing(serious question, not a jab) do you think it's possible that you could do this on the road with a hot engine, EGR isn't the problem it's the dual therm water manifold that gets in the way.
CanadianRigger 04-09-2005, 11:36 PM I agree with TD, i just tore down my 00 and would have to say its impossible to remove the PMD without removing A/C comp, dual T stats, lower intake and a ton of other garbage thats in the way. If someone here can do it on the newer style HD's without all that hassle then they're a friggin magician! Now my 95 i would say could be done without a lot of work first.
