: Engine Identification Numbers ???

I still have yet to figure out exactly what engine i have. The vehicle is a P-30 from 1987 and came with a 6.2. It was owned by the US post office and then sold to a person who was buying out fleets from them and then sold to me at about 94,000 miles. The previous owner, who i talk to all the time, is 100% convinced that they put a 6.5 N/A in this thing some time around 1999-2000 because there is a casting number on the block that says D149; and that the D represents the month, the 14 represents the day of the month, and the 9 is the last number of the year, which could mean 1989 or 1999, but it is not likely they replaced the engine on a 1987 vehicle in 1989, so it must be 1999 which would make it a 6.5, and the engine was cast on 4/14/99.
I called GM parts division and asked them about this logic and they did say that was true about the casting numbers, but that there is also an engine identification number stamped on the block that would say exactly what engine this is and when it was made.
But i have never found it. It is supposed to be "at the front of the engine on the passenger side where the head meets the block on a machined pad with stamped numbers" but no matter what angle i try to look at that area from, i never can find it.
Can anyone shed some light on this matter? Has anyone ever actually seen those numbers?
thanks,
