WOW -- I feel like my truck has dropped its cojones. That thing really roars. I had my doubts, but I am glad I did it.

Have you driven it on, say, the Interstate at steady Interstate speeds and if so, does it have a loud drone noise in the cab?

Do you have egt gauges on it and did it lower the egt's?

Thanks.

I performed the mufflerectomy on mine last week and I wish I had done it sooner. I left the stock system in and just put a chunk of 3.5" flex pipe in as a temporary deal to see how it sounded (and because it had to pass approval of the wife before being permanent). Driving to Oklahoma this weekend to get our horse so I can't wait to see how it sounds pulling the trailer.

Yes -- I was on the interstate today for some reason, and no it wasn't a drone that annoyed me. You can tell, but it is by no means obnoxious.

I just replaced the muffler with 3.5" pipe. It was awesome -- I couldn't imagine 4 or 5 straight.

No -- I didn't do any performance monitoring, and I was wondering my self. So:

If anyone knows the performance gains of taking out the muffler please let us know.

I took my muffler out of my 4" system and welded up with 4" pipe about a month ago and it is BADA$$ ! I love it. Not too loud or obnoxious - But it does sound off when you want it to. I love stopping at the light next to the little tuner cars then really lettin' it rip as I leve them in a cloud of the black stuff !

Found this thread that should help:

Claims it lowers EGT's by 100. That's pretty good I guess.

Many thanks, Seth. I have a 4" MBRP s.s. system on my 02, lb7. That kit came with an extra lenght of 4" ss. straight pipe and I'd considered unbolting the muffler and just trying the pipe. I tend to have these brain farts while drinking a few brews!

I have a couple questions on straight piping my D-Max. I would just take the stock muffler off and replace the pipe like some of you have mentioned. Some of you say that it will actually lower the egt. If I go ahead and do this do I have to worry about it hurting the motor in anyway? Or will it acutally help everything since the temps will be lower?

SethMcKinney
04-09-2005, 09:27 PM
Well -- if I'm not misatken all a muffler does is "muffle" sound so I think there is no concern to the engine.

Ok I didn't figure it probably would do much to it. You guys have me curious now. I might have to look into doing that now SOUNDS like a good weekend project to make some Goods SOUND.

I'm not one for trying to win any popularity contest here or elsewhere but you go runnin' around with something that sounds like it needs a whole lot of muffler service you're gonna get a lot of looks from a lot of people. That you can bet on. A few are going to think it's cool but 95 per cent are going to be thinking one thing--A$$HOLE.

Also, would you notice much difference between just cutting the cat and muffler off and replacing it with straight 3.5" muffler pipe vs. cutting off the entire system and replacing it with a full 4" straight pipe?

Does MBRP or any exhaust manufacture offer a full straight 4" pipe deleting the muffler and cat?

Thanks, and still using the search function:D

If all you do is drive you truck without towing much most think it is allright...

I had a 4" exhaust on my old reg. cab and it was deep and throaty.

My brother in law has a straight pipe on his and with the Corn Pro 20+5 hooked up the drown will about make you puke after 2 + hours.

But when you stand on it people look....:ro)

Wow I just had my stock muffler pulled off and just added in pipe like others and I really like it. Nice rummble on the highway but when you are out the gas it makes some noise. I mainly did it for the sound so it was worth it so far. I did mine so that it I decided to go back the the muffler it will be a nice easy switch.

Have a Banks 4" exhaust on my. Talked to them two days ago, and they are sending me out a custom stainless piece to replace the muffler. I can't wait to hear it. If any of you are looking to run a straight pipe with a stock system, there's a guy selling 3.5" mandrel bent pieces on ebay. Check it out... Seems to be a drop in replacement.

Thanks for the comments guys, I really enjoy it too, but like Lennox69 said, I can't pull a 5er now. But that's ok, the aux tank I threw in under the tool box was a good addition instead of the fifth wheel hitch. I don't pull anything big anyways.

SethMcKinney
04-13-2005, 06:10 PM
This may be stupid, but why can't you pull a 5er any more? Too much soot?

Zorganov
04-13-2005, 06:28 PM
With a long bed I'm sure you could get away with it, but for me with the short bed, I don't have enough room back there for it, unless I wanted to mount the hitch further back in the bed, but OH MY GOODNESS wouldn't I be playing with fire!!

cdhd2001
04-13-2005, 07:58 PM
Shouldn't be a problem. I did measurements on my truck and 5th wheel, should be able to turn +50 degrees with the slider forward. No problem with it slid back.

Actually, I accidently towed for a full tank with the slider in the rear position. Nothing felt wrong, handled great!

Zorganov
04-14-2005, 05:51 PM
Hmmm, interesting. I don't think I'll ever tow a 5er anyway because of the lift either. And then to add I'd have to take out the tool box and the aux tank underneath. Too much hassle for me right now. I don't tow heavy anyway , the most will be 7000#, 20' flat deck with a 454 mudder on it. No problem for receiver mount trailer.

But we're off on a bunny trail here, so....... back to the straight pipe

What kind of warantee issues do you guys have with a straight pipe? I thought I read somewhere if you dont have a cat the dealer wont touch you truck? Was that only Kalifornia? I bought my truck 4" straight piped and wonder if I have injector issues if they will take care of me?

Zorganov
04-16-2005, 09:06 AM
Trucks didn't come with cats till 2004.5, or like you said from california. My truck is neither so I'm good to go. The only thing my dealer told me was that my emissions warranty would be gone, that's all. Yeah, like I care because I've replaced the entire stock exhaust anyways!:ro)

Anyone had issues running aftermarket exhaust / straight pipes in National / state parks? Do they meet requirement for spark arrestor?

VFRRider
04-23-2005, 10:38 AM
Good question car nut, hadn't thought of that one. I know here in Michigan it is unlawful to have a straight pipe. 257.707c partly reads "A person shall not operate a vehicle on a highway or street if the vehicle has a defect in the exhaust system which affects sound reduction, is not equipped with a muffler or other noise dissipative device, or is equipped with a cutout, bypass, amplifier, or similar device."
It is a civil infraction, and it goes on to state it is a misdemeanor to sell, install, or replace a muffler or exhaust part that causes the motor vehicle...:blahblah:

Anyways, those that are doing this should check with their State if they are concerned.. I didn't see it as an issue with a TurboDiesel, as a straightpipe on a TD is much much quieter that a straight on a gasser or a motorcycle with pipes.

coalbucket1
04-25-2005, 05:31 PM
Some states consider a turbo to be a noise suppressor
