How common of a problem is this on the Dmax? It's not too bad now but I gotta get it fixed before the drags open up.

How hard is the pump to change?

I am not sure of how common the problem is, but I had to replace the pump on my 2002 with 60,000 miles on it. It is not difficult, but it does take some time. My dealer let me borrow the starter holder to loosen the balancer bolt. It is really nice that GM puts one bolt for the water pump behind the balancer pulley.

Would the water pump be covered under the 5/100000 mile warranty?

Are you sure it is the pump and not the lower hose. I had a quarter size puddle on the floor this morning. I ran it up on the ramps and had to use a flashlight to get a good look. It looked like it was coming from the top of the hose. I was able to tighten the clamp over two full turns without forcing the issue. I could also see what looked like a weep hole but it was dry. Later! Frank

I just had my water pump replaced a few weeks back. If I remember correctly it was quoted to me as a 4hr job. I've got an 03 and 44k so I'm outside the base warranty but it was covered with my $100 deductible. I haven't heard/read of many issues, but like any mechanical problem it can fail. My leak was so miniscule that even with a 3000 mile to Fl and 1000 to TN a few weeks later my coolant level hardly dropped. I would just see a wet spot but not a puddle under my truck on daily basis.

Well the pump and line are both leaking. The leak really isn't that bad. We put the pressure pump on the tank to find out where it was leaking. Glad the warranty covers it.

Pretty common on my truck. I'm on my third pump. 54,000 miles.

My water pump started leaking @ 2000 miles, had it replaced @ 2300. First one the dealer did at the time . Good ever since
