ANyone have any idea what the standard hieght for a ball in a slide in hitch is? I have to adjust the hieght of the ball on my Reese hitch since purchasing this truck. It is taller than the old one so I need to lower the ball.

Thanks
Brad

It will vary with the drop hitch size.

Your trailer should have the dimensions on a spec sheet that come with the trailer.

If no spec sheet, you will have to set the trailer frame level and measure the hitch height, then get a corresponding drop hitch or trunnion hitch and set for height of the trailer hitch minus about 1" I think. That will make up for leveling the truck as the weight settles onto the truck frame.

The key is insuring that the trailer is LEVEL.

Do what you need to do to get it there.

Level is a under statement or it can and will put undo stress on the axle welds, over time this could cause axle failure. most trialers are in the 21-23 inch range off the ground.

The other thing to check is to make sure if you are using a weight distributing hitch is that you set the angle of the hitch head to gain the maximum gain out of your sway bars/weight distributing bars.

Great. Thanks for the answers. I knew that it should be level but I wanted to get the ball hieght average that Coaster Chaser mentioned so I would have a good starting point. It is a weight distributing hitch as well. I had it all set up correctly for my old truck and forget to measure it prior to selling the old one.

Hey jaspwer2222 you are not to far from me. I am in the Fort Walton Beach area but used to live in Tallahassee.

Thanks all
Brad

According to the reese website, take the height at the top of the coupler on the trailer, then add 1/16 in. for every 100lbs of tongue weight. That will be how high you want the top of the ball. Top of coupler 22in, 800lb tongue weight, 1/16 x 8=1/2in. Top of ball would be 22 1/2in.
