John at DPS sold me an Airaid Sunday. I really don't think these things help at all but since I am hunting Dodges now ( Are you listening Tim, Craig Johnson?):h ) I felt I needed to cover all my options. ( what if they do work? ) I noticed first of all there was not any turbo whine ( good, I hate that). The tube is plastic; I like that too because of heat. I noticed quicker throttle response. ( I will chalk that up to b/s cause I can be fooled like anyone else with a new toy) The fact is; turbo spool up is 3 times as fast as before.( that is not b/s) So far I like this setup. Trippen swears 15 horsepower on his truck with his AME. I am starting to believe.

I'm really curious about dyno results.

I've bought so many "snake oil" intakes on the Camaro and Vette, that I'm more than a little gun-shy of them. How many people put nitrous on BEFORE an aircleaner? :D

I've got an airraid laying around from my 8.1...I wonder if my afro-engineering skills are up to adapting it.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif

I went into this install as a non believer. I allready admited that I could be full of it ( I'm human ) but, the gauge don't lie. I watch that thing and it moved slow compared to now. I can actually zing the boost gauge now. Does quicker boost add power? Feels like it. Being a pessamist, I don't think so, but it stays on. ( just in case it really works lol ).

Your car must be really be a beast

I took off the Trap and had the Vararam installed looking for more MPH in the 1/4. I think I got 1 or 2.

I wish it was as cheap to mod the Vette as it is these trucks :D

Aw Mike, I thought we could all depend on you to be "anti K&N" for life!

I've always been so against aftermarket air filters that my friends won't even bring them up in my presence anymore, but I've gotta say that now I'm intrigued.

I'm still not convinced any of them are worth a crap on a normally aspirated engine, but maybe I'm totally missing the boat with turboed engines.

I'm not buying any of this B.S. until the dyno sheets and track slips are in though!:D

And P.S. What about the dirt factor?

Last dyno was 872/766.......it's a scary ride. I am in the process of a cam change. Mike Morgan had a spec cam built for me last year and I am just now getting around to installing it.

I didnt notice any difference at the track but I did notice the same as what Trippin reported on a dyno. And I swear it smokes less with the AFE. There is a gain in HP to be had IMO with an AFE but unless your going for every last bit there are alot cheaper ways to get the HP.

I have the metal tube and it wistles like crazy. I like that though. You know what they say Mike, if its too loud your too old:p: ):h

Whippersnapper, is that all you've got Mike?):h

My mom routinely calls me worse than that when I call her!

But on a slightly more serious note, I've got a theory:

Since boost is already built when drag-racing at the track, the turbo is of course already spooled up.

On the street, though, one of my only complaints about how my truck runs now is the classic turbo lag.

So, could it be that the aftermarket intakes/air cleaners don't show a difference on the track since boost is already built, but they do in fact help out in more real-world conditions?

I'm still not sold on these damn things, mainly because I feel they're overpriced and let dirt into my precious DMax. But I am giving them another look and trying to be objective here--I'm not afraid to admit I was wrong!

Ok, ok way to much infromation:eek: . Mike I can make the attiude squak most any time when I get on it under load, flashs over boost at me, 30 psi+, and that is with a stock air box, what ckind of boost numbers are you seeing?

Mike L.
04-07-2005, 10:41 PM
I can zing the boost gauge to 24 psi at will and this is city driving. I live 4 miles from work and it is stop and go each way so no real test. My point to all this is I have never seen my boost climb that quick. I dropped to the 80 hp tune tonight for a while and I could still zing it but a little slower. I saw a late Vette on the way home and flipped the switch to the 120 tune and nailed has behind. ( had my finger on the extreme but did not need it ). When I am at the strip in the extreme tune, I see 31 maybe 32 psi. There is no place around here that I can test the extreme on the street.

( just in case it really works lol ).If you seal it to the hood, you will dramtically drop inlet tempertures (mine dropped over 50 degrees and now my inlet temps are typically a few higher than the outside temps whereas before the AFE box would show 50+ higher than outside (measured with a remote temp sender.

Plus side, EGT's dropped 100+ degress with the airbox.

I see more boost on the dyno and on the street with the Xtreme and the AFE than when I am just running the stock box.

I didnt believe it either till I dynoed it......

IMO if you arnt doing it for the noise or searching for every last bit of HP a intake isnt worth it. If your running at stock trans I dont see why you would run one other than noise.

The only reason I'd do it is if it does make the turbo spool significantly quicker. I think once I make the switch to 4" or larger exhaust, I'll get much faster spooling, though.

And I still don't like the idea of more dirt in my engine...

looks like most of your trucks are LB7's. Has anyone noticed the same results on the LLY using the AFE or similar intake? I'm more interested in EGT reduction than anything, but quicker spool-up would be a plus. I had the AFE stage 2 on my LB7 and really noticed a difference. :help: anyone with real world experience on the LLY chime in.

What about the stock replacement filters? Where is the biggest restriction. The tube, stock box, filter, or the preheater? I have the stock replacement K&N and it seems to work fine. Thought about adding a few more holes in the bottom of the box.

I only picked up a few HP on the dyno between the stock paper on no filter. This was on a swisscheesed box. Duno if the swisscheese helped or not.

I Picked up about 1/2 a tenth in the 1/8 mile from a K and N drop in to the AFE stage 2. Also is started to smoke less.

I'm going to put on an intake, but mostly so I can compare my dyno's to others. Nobody else seems to run the stocker! :(
