I now have 10,000 miles on my LLY and was wondering if it is necassary to change the fuel filter or juat a waste of about $45.00. If so, what brand should I get or not get.
Thanks

It sure couldnt hurt, especially since you probably have the old style single pleat filter.
IIRC there all made by Racor, just different labeling, but Im not sure about that, I picked up a Baldwin for mine.

if you have no issues, you can wait until the 15k miles. i do mine every 15k unless i get some bad fuel.

Also no one mentioned that $45 is a little excessive. They're a several vendors here(see the vendor forum) that carry the filters in the $26-$30 range. Buy two or 3 and always keep a spare. I also agree, if no issues, truck is running good don't change it until the 15,000 miles or the engine mannerism's change.

As Victory Red mentioned, if you are paying 45 bucks, you are paying way to much. The max you should pay is 30 bucks.

GM says to change them every 15K. Assume you pay 30 bucks for a new filter and change it at 10K, but it could have made it to 15K. Worse case is a cost of 10 bucks for the remaining life of the filter.

I recently changed mine and another one. Both had about 11.6K on them. Mine could have made the 15K but the other was definately due.

Unfortunately there is no way to tell the condition of the filter unless you cut it open. I plan on changing it every 10K to make sure it has not exceeded it's useful life, rather then to save, at best, 10 dollars. There have been quite a few members who have posted pictures of filters with well under 15K that were used up. If you wait tell the truck runs poorly, you have waited way to long.

I changed the first fuel filter on my LB7 at 6,000 miles and swore I could feel a difference. At that point we were not dissecting filters etc.

At 3k I changed the filter on my LLY to coincide with the oil/filter change. The filter media was already pretty well used. Glad I changed it.

My take is that the assembly dust/dirt etc present makes the first filter change more critical. Most any plastic container that I have seen did a nice job of attracting dust, and I doubt the tank is washed thoroughly before filling...

I'd do it now. I get all my filters from www.gmdieseltech.com (http://www.gmdieseltech.com) (he's a supporting vendor) I think it's about $30.00 and it's the GM double pleated filter (I know GM does't make it). You also might consider a secondary fuel filter system like the Nicktane. I'm planning on changing my CAT filter every 10K and the OEM filter every 20K.

I've got 13K on my original filter and though I can still hit redline, it is begining to take longer to get there and she is feeling a little sluggish. Tried to go the recommended 15K but I'm thinking 10K is more in line for the fuel I'm getting. Bummer to have to change them so often but a bigger bummer to go back to a gasser!!

I just did mine today at 5200 miles and I was surprized how black the element was, If I would of waited till 15k that thing would of been nasty.
