I have been thinking about replacing the stock 6.2 fuel filter - the rectangular shaped one - for several reasons. Mainly because i am going to start running home-brew biodiesel and i want something with a clear sediment bowl so i can monitor the fuel for contaminents, and especially water. Usually people water-wash the biodiesel before using it which makes me a bit nervous and i want to make sure i am not getting any water in the line.
I called GM parts division already and they could not give me the specs i needed on the stock filter, mainly what micron it is. I was also wondering how many gph it is rated for. And one other thing - does the heater just kick on at startup on cold days, or does it stay on all the time?

any info would be appreciated. I was also wondering if anyone has suggestions for the most economical way to replace this type of filter - is there something for under $100?
thanks,
Paul

My recomendation would be to leave your stock filter where it is and add a Raycor filter in front of it. It could be a slightly larger micron filter to remove most of larger particles and the water.

The fuel heater is thermastaticly controlled based on the temp.

The stock fuel filter heater is set to come on at 40 degrees. I put a manual switch on my heater and switch it on when the outside temp nears 40 degrees.

I have a Racor, and I threw out the stock filter because it was leaky.

The Racor can be outfitted with a fuel heater and water sensor if necessary. I don't run a fuel heater here on the wetcoast.

Hey, check e-bay for a Racor filter. I got a pretty good price on mine there. I'm in the process of hooking up a two tank SVO system in my burban. Good luck with your project.
