: need help with chip decision

I have an 02 crew cab 4x4 with the allison. I want to buy a chip/tuner to give me more power and I have done some searching and reading here and am now more confused than when I started.

This truck is my daily driver. I tow trailers from 4000 to 12000 LB alot. The smaller trailers almost daily and the bigger ones a few times a year. I am not into racing or anything like that. I don't plan on doing any other mods to my truck except possibly exhaust and maybe a K&N or AFE air filter. Basically I want to add as much power as possilbe without tearing something up or having to beef up the tranny, etc.

From what I have read I am looking a wanting 50-80hp. Based on this I have narrowed it down to:

TTS tow for $695 (80HP)
BullyDog Power pup $395 (50-95hp)
Edge Juice $584 (60-150hp)
with attitude $809

The power pup looks good because it is the cheapest, but I don't want to buy something I am not going to be happy with.

The TTS I know nothing about other that I have seen it mentioned good on these forums. Their website has little info or at least I was not impressed with it.

The Edge website claims it makes tranny adjustments or monitors the tranny to prevent damage. None of the other units claim this or if they do I did not read it on their website.

At this time I am leaning toward the Edge.

Any comments or other things to look at before I make the order?

I have the Edge with Attitude and it works great. also its simple to install and remove. you get the benefit of gauges outta of it. a pyro and boost gauge with pod will run you over $260 and if you tow with a chip its a must have. i tow my 8000lb boat and 10000lb sunny brook 34ft travel trailer in level 3 (75hp/220ftlb) without a problem. i got 14.5 mpg last time with the trailer on the back. not bad for movin 17,000lbs @ 70mph. Also you should be able to do better then $809 for the Edge. I paid $720 for mine. hope this helps. oh the 60-150 juice is the HOT module, the standard model is 40-125hp.

bdog,

For the use you described the Edge Juice and Attitude is goint to be the best and safest option. You get the necessary gauges (especially for the weights you are towing) the tranny slip protection, and EGT protection. Costs more than some of the others you mentioned, but if you are towing up to 12,000 lbs you NEEEEEED gauges, even on a stock truck. Give us a call we will be glad to help you with any questions etc. We stock Edge, Predator, Superchips, van Aaken etc, all the major brands and have experience with most everything out there.

I agree with Mark, especially on an 02.

The TTS is a "custom tune" by Steve Cole. It is written specifically for your truck. People who have driven TTS tuned trucks swear by them. I'm one of them. It's the "Cadillac" of tunes.

You must remove your stock ECM and swap it. It is best to buy a second ECM ($400?) if you worry about going to the dealer with a tune in your truck. The dealer probably wouldn't notice it, but why gamble?

It is not the cheapest, nor the easiest way to go, but it is the smoothest with the least problems.

Name a brand of tuner and do a search. See if you can find unhappy owners. I'm never met anyone who was not in love with their TTS tune.

Second choice for LB7's? I'd have to say Edge, even though I have not driven a LB7 Edge truck, owners I have met and read about on the net, have very good luck with them. The Edge is the best engineered product on the market that I'm aware of, and their customer service is second to none. I have ran their LLY product, and while I was not pleased with some of it's quirks, they are specific to the LLY, and Edge bent over backwards to help me.

Banks also has all of the protection of the Edge. The 6-gun without speedloader is about $600. Stock - 124hp. Level 4 is the highest recommended setting when towing without speedloader. I realize that with the Edge/attitude you get to monitor your engine, but the Banks has all of these safety parameters already built in. Set it and forget it. It's just another option for you to consider. Happy hunting.

As others have said the guages are a must.

The standard juice will have all the towing power that you require and then some. If you don't want to do your tranny don't go with the hot OJ or stay out of the high hp of the other tuners.

I'm running stock intake and exhaust pulling heavy loads also. Doing the swiss cheese to the air box was an improvement, I'm not sure the intake requires any more. I have considered a straight pipe or muffler change out to help reduce EGT's, but I worry about the hearing of the horses that I haul. Yes, horses do listen to the rider.

I would skip an intake or different filter in your case. Also you dont need a boost gauge if you arnt going to monkey with the waste gate at all. Its fun to look at though.

On the TTS stuff, You dont need to do the swapping of ECM's on the lower tunes. I run the 80 HP tune from Steve and it seems to run a tad bit cooler EGT's than the edges 90 HP tune. The TTS is also VERY smooth and driveable. McRat was right in saying TTS makes the Caddy of tunes IMO

The edge attitude is nice with all the bells and wistles and such.

Edge also has saftey features built in but NO box is "set and forget" with its "saftey" features. If a box has a built in defuel when it senses slip it must first have slip there to sense! Please dont be luled into a false sense of security that since the box has "saftey" features you are fine. Even if you dont limp your trans or anything like that you can be doing damage. Regardless of the banks propoganda there is no 100% safe box if you dont use it with a level head!

PM or email Steve (Diesel Tech) for some specific info on the TTS and I would sujest you also call Edge and try to talk to Aaron or another tech.

I would chose between weaterh you like the bells and wistles of the edge or not. All the alarms and such the edge has is kinda nice and you can view all kindsa nifty things that are going on with your truck. One thing I will say though is I wouldnt really be concerend with the adjustability on the fly at your power levels. In the bigger tunes its nice to click it outa kill but IMO not really on the lower ones. A bunch of shifting of power levels confuses the allison, set it at one leve and leave it there IMO
