: Predator vs. Bullydog (I know...I know)
doughboy 04-06-2005, 12:12 AM Hello all,
What are the main differences between the Bullydog Power Pup and the Predator?
My mod plan is as follows...
Tuner
285 Revos on the stock rims
4" cat back exhaust MRBP or Bullydog
Crank the T-bars a little and maybe add Bilsteins
I want to stay as stealth as possible (no gages) not to raise any questions about warranty work. I am not looking to get greedy with the power settings on either tuner (no more than level 2) since the lack of desire to add gages and also to preserve the life of the Allison.
I commute about 70 miles a day, 85% of which is freeway.
Given the above, which tuner would work best?
TIA,
John
02RedWS6TA 04-06-2005, 12:21 AM If you want to stay safe and use gauges that the dealer won't know about you could do the following:
Bully dog power pup/dyno dominator/Rapid power along with the OutLook Monitor. It all unplugs in minutes (about 15 if you put the EGT probe in and want to remove it too with only the small hole remaining). If not any of the boxes work nice alone and are equipped with "tranny smart" programming (something is better than nothing).
As for the comparison, I can't say anything about the Pred but I've heard great things about it (never used one myself). I have used the Power Pup though and have been happy with it. Great power and seems to have good drivability.
cowdoc 04-06-2005, 09:39 AM I can't comment on the Bullydog, but I have the Predator and love it. Everyone says that it runs hot though. I do not have gauges or an exhaust....Yet....
The performance over stock is impressive ):h . 65 hp is as high as I have set mine so far and for my purposes that is plenty. The tranny shift funny for a day or so but it settles in and shifts normal after a while. An added bonus of the Predator, and maybe the Bullydog (not sure) is the ability to read and clear codes. So far I have not thrown any codes and I have had it installed for a couple of months.
Good luck and enjoy!
McRat 04-06-2005, 10:38 AM The Predator has real time data display of engine parameters. It is slightly more stable on the upload cycle. Product is a bit more "professional" in appearance, features, and user screens.
Power is similiar if compared to the Hot Power Pup. The Predator 100 is actually about a 120 tune at the tires, and is VERY quick for a 120 tune. 3.5 seconds quicker than stock. Seriously.
Either product will cause your Allison to "limp" after awhile on the high power settings.
I've used both, and I'd give the Predator an 8.5 and the Power Pup a 6.
McRat 04-06-2005, 10:47 AM PS - The "safest" route IMO is the TTS Tow for what you are doing. It's more money, but it's a smoother tune.

McRat,
Can you adjust tire size and remove the speed limiter with the TTS? Is it a PCM swap out or is it a handheld? Is it the same componay that makes/made the "custom" boxes for C5s?
Thanks,
John
McRat 04-06-2005, 10:22 PM The TTS always removes the limiter. You tell him your tire size, and he writes a custom tune. PCM swap. Steve tuned our Z06 with excellent results. Quickest 346ci NA vette at the 04 Z06Vette Fest in Kentucky on his "emergency" tune the day before we left.

Thanks. I'm guessing a spare PCM will run about $400. This is starting to get expensive. Not as bad as the Vette tax, but not cheap either :banghead: .
McRat 04-06-2005, 11:04 PM I'm getting to be a connisewer of LLY tunes. :D
The TTS Tow is the best tow tune, but bang-for-de-buck is probably Predator. It is certainly a good tune as well. Just the TTS is smoother. If I was on a budget, I'd go Predator, but if I had to demo a truck, I'd use the TTS. I've got a few tuners, but for daily, TTS is what I prefer.
Power? Shear brute tire-shredding, trans hurtin', no fk'g prisoners balls to the wall performance?
Stay tuned. :) I'd be doing a more extensive test on a tune that puts the other LLY tunes to shame.
hdmax 04-07-2005, 10:12 AM I can't comment on the Bullydog, but I have the Predator and love it. Everyone says that it runs hot though. I do not have gauges or an exhaust....Yet....
Hot is not the word for it! I can't say how hot the newest tunes will cause the truck too get, but with the Banks 4" monster exhaust, AFE stage II intake, and the Predator 120 on my 2002 Chevy 2500HD, I have seen 1612*, 1596*, 1614*, 1646* and 1588* in 1/4 mile runs. And one time towing I seen 1648* on the 80hp setting. The hottest my truck has ever got running the Quadzilla Stealth is 1340*, and that was the only time it has been more then 1268*. All reading are taken with the X-Monitor, which stores them until you clear them, this is nice for 1/4 mile runs where you may not be able to get an accurate reading while going down the track, you just bring it up after the race to see the max temp.
From what I read, the Stealth and Bully Dog PowerPup are just about the same.
If I were buying a setup now, It would either be the 10 setting Stealth, pillar gages, and the G-Tech, or the hot Juice with an Attitude, and pillar guages. I understand the Attitude has gages, but they are not nearly as easy to monitor as pillar gages such as the X-Monitor.
sledman 04-07-2005, 01:54 PM Gee, if the Predator runs that hot, maybe it's not what I want for towing in the mountains of Idaho, and I should sell mine and get something that runs cooler. I don't use the truck to hot rod around, but I do want to be able to run grades at 65 MPH without getting too hot. Is it substantiated that the Quadzilla runs that much cooler than the Predator? If so, my Predator is FOR SALE!
McRat 04-07-2005, 02:15 PM Can't say what the Predator runs as far as EGT's towing. If I get time, I will check. I'm only towing 6,000lb this weekend though. What level would you like tested? I tow up some fairly steep mountains going to Vegas.
I do know the TTS #2 is fine towing at 75mph uphill at high altitude with 6000lb. ~1300deg max.
dpower 04-07-2005, 02:19 PM Stay tuned. :) I'd be doing a more extensive test on a tune that puts the other LLY tunes to shame.[/QUOTE]
You don't have one of those tts lly extreme programs hanging around do you pat? I am EXTREMELY jealous!:grd:

40 tune would by fine. I'm not interested in the TTS product. I'm more of a plug'n play kinda guy.
Thanks for the help!

If you get time I would like to know the egt's @ 65hp. I routinely tow about the same weight as you will be towing.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not on the list of LLY Extreme beta testers, so I will have to wait like everyone else for the retail product to come out. I will continue to test other products as they become available.
I will be testing a PPE tuner for the second time. First time, I had fueling problems, and it seems I have them resolved.
doughboy 04-07-2005, 11:19 PM Is there anything similar to LS1 Edit out?
McRat 04-07-2005, 11:22 PM Supposedly there is something coming. Do not hold your breath.
Predator 65 HP tune towing up high alt. egt 1200.. Per McRat
sledman 04-08-2005, 04:31 PM Predator 65 HP tune towing up high alt. egt 1200.. Per McRat
Thanks McRat. just a few questions.
Trailer weight?
Approx. grade?
Length of grade?
Average speed up grade?
Outdoor temperature?
Was your speed steady?
How much throttle was left, meaning, how much faster would you guess you could have pulled the hill?
And anythjing else you would like to throw in...........
Sorry about all questions, I haven't chosen which gauges I want yet, though I'm leaning towards the Diprocol gauges with the 2-gauge A-pillar.
Ok McRat will get back to you. He is towing in high winds & too much typing for my palm pilot :)

I so wish there were. If you find one please post it.

Didn't scale it this time, but about 14,000lb combined weight. 6,000 on trailer, 8,000 on truck. Tires, jack, fuel, etc, etc.
Baker Grade. 4000'+ altitude. 6%+. If you haven't seen Baker Grade, it is legendary for overheating engines. Semi's go up it 35mph laden. Lots of warning signs everywhere.
Seventy degrees
Cruise control on at 80mph uphill = 1250, 70=1200.
You can EASILY hit 1400 deg by standing on it and holding. Stacking the Van Aaken on high with the 65HP Predator actual drops EGT 50 deg.
The TTS LLY #2 tune runs 100 deg cooler than even the Pred 65+VA stack.
All my testing is Cruise Control testing. Hotrodding up hill towing is not a good thing even bone stock.
Diprocol is a GOOD pyro! It reacts as quick as a tach. Very sensitive.
Bottom line? Your Predator on 65 should be safe at 70mph towing medium loads. The Predator does run hotter than some other tunes.
cowdoc 04-11-2005, 09:37 AM Predator 65 HP tune towing up high alt. egt 1200.. Per McRatThanks Kat and McRat.
Good info.
Can't wait till I can afford gauges and exhaust so I can see what this truck can do!
gtguy67 04-11-2005, 05:15 PM I just made a trip to west Texas from GA. I was stock tune on the way out running 75-80 pulling a motorcycle trailer temps were 850-950. On the way back I ran the Predator @ 65 running the same speed, pulling the same load, I saw temps typically around 800. Outside temperatures were similar on both legs, though I had a strong cross winds on the way back. For general cruising the Predator seems the same or a bit cooler, the difference was peak temps...the Predator would peak around 1300 and stock rarely hit 1100...
