I cant answer your other questions but, the engine tune has seemed to make a difference with my exhaust note.

01 to 04 (lb7) had injector and glowplug problems (under warranty), 04.5 to 06 had overheating problems (lly), 06 to early 07 had transmission line leaks (lbz).

power wise the lbz has the most but has connecting rod issues with adding good power (some owners actually switch to lb7 design). modding is about the same for all the year models there really isn't one engine that is really better for mods

An LB7 doesn't have any of the emmissions crap on it either. Just a thought!

To answer your exhaust question, the lb7 and lly sound completely different straight piped. As far as I know the reason for it is the turbos are different. My lb7 with the straight pipe you seem to hear more of the roar of the engine, while with the lly, and I'm assuming its the same with the lbz (but not sure I've never heard one myself) you hear more of the turbo, sounding more like moving air rather than the engine. I myself like the sound of the lb7 better than the newer engines, but not sayin the lly doesn't sound cool either.

Oh ya, the lly straight piped sounds like a jet takin off. And ya the lb7 has the more of a train chuggin down the tracks IMO. Just as long as you get a duramax! :ro)

some LB7s have emissions crap like the cali/fleet/federal emissions. the egr system on those models are really defective cause they don't really work

If I was looking today, I would be looking for the LLY or LBZ, simply due to the LB7 injector issue. I am keeping my LB7 and crossing my fingers.

Ya some not all. mine came with a lost kitty, no federal emissions, and no egr. the injector issue does suck, but it's happened to everybody else and they got through it.

I agree, no matter what anyone says on here, injectors are very, very expensive. And if you dont have the skills or tools to do them yourself labor is killer too. Just look at the first gen. section of this forum, its full of inj. problems. And some on 2nd or 3rd sets.
