Hi,

In my 1982 chevy suburban the water in fuel light keeps coming on. I have been ignoring it cause the engine doesn't appear to be affected by it. I have emptied the tank twice now (45 gallon tank) and it still comes on. It first randomly came on while I was driving. Now it only comes on when I start the truck in cold weather. Any ideas? Also where is the sensor located on a 1982 chevy surburban? I suspect it is in the tank somewhere? I have the screw on cylindrical fuel filters not the box shaped one on newer 6.2L engines. I have drained it half way a few times but all I am getting is fuel, not even a drop of water. I would just like the light to go out. Perhaps I need a new sensor? Where would you buy one if I needed it. Also where is the wiring for this, would like to check that as well. Since the trucks front shocks don't do much I wouldn't be surprised if yet another wire came loose somehow.

Thanks

you need to change both fuel filters, ones under the intake, one is on the firewall.

The WIF sensor should be on one of these filters (probrably the bigger one)

If you keep running it you will get water in your ip or injectors and cause about $600 damage.

Or it may just be a bad sensor.

So again, replace both filters, dont just drain them out.

Afair the WIF sensor is in the tank on the early models.

Not sure about the Suburban but '82 trucks had fuel tank drain valves located in the front spring hanger brackets on both sides of a factory dual tank setup. There was only one, left front spring pocket, on the trucks with single tanks.

It was a valve with a t-handle to unscrew and drain liquid from the bottom of each tank. Look and see, you should have a drain valve somewhere, near the tank.

The WIF sensor is located inside the tank, part of the gauge sending unit/fuel pickup assembly. It is a plastic piece, 1 1/2" by 3/4" by 4" long, with a probe tube at the bottom, wiring plugs onto it.

GM #25003964 Fuel Detector Pkg. Last I checked, GM still had them in the system, that was a few years ago. Probably no longer available. Wouldn't hurt to check, if you need one.

Mine tends to come on at random when I have a nearly full tank of fuel, it doesn't come on at all when the tank is 1/3 full or less.

Change the filter and drain the water regularly anyway, is my approach...
