: easy question
What is the purpose of the black box that is connected to the turbo fresh air intake? It is tho one that says 6.6 on it. I assume it is some sort of resonator but truck sounds the same without it. It is now riding in the bed of the truck with a pvc cap in the hole. Who would of thought that I would buy so many parts for my new truck at Home Depot.

jtaylor11 01-27-2009, 02:05 AM Yeah many of us has deleted that.
randy_the_hack 01-27-2009, 07:28 AM It's the "optional unfiltered air intake path" thingy... which is precisely why most of us block it. BTW, you can block it and reinstall over the blocker... which makes it look like it did from the factory. Makes this a stealth mod...
bill88 01-27-2009, 08:20 AM better hurry and buy more from HOMEY...Seen last night there closing some stores and cuttin back on the work force
bowties4ever 01-27-2009, 12:42 PM I thought it was a turbo whistle.:D
Oregonnovaguy 01-27-2009, 11:27 PM The only purpose of the "black box" is to reduce noise at certain RPMs. It does not reduce power or fuel mileage.

I searched for the word "resonator" and here's 500 pages of threads on resonators:

Here's a more recent one:

Here's one from this afternoon:

To narrow it down, here's 220 pages regarding searching for "intake resonator."
Here's an informative thread regarding how these plastic resonators do leak air causing crap to get into the engine.

Here's another one with oil samples regarding the leaks:

Here's what a resonator plug looks like:

Its called a quick cap and can be bought from Home depot or Lowes for around 2 bucks.
On a stock truck, it'll make the intake throatier during acceleration. With an intake or exhaust installed already, you wont hear a thing. Hope that helps.

Then again, how many threads show up for "little black box thingy" :p:
Guy had no idea what the part was.

Exactly. Why do people insist on giving new people a hard time about asking questions. Some times it is easier to ask then try to search through hundreds of threads to find exactly what you are looking for. I didn't really know what the guy was talking about until someone posted and let him know. That informed me for something I wasn't searching for. Not trying to flame you. I just get a little aggrevated whenever new guys (like myself) post questions, and almost always by the third or fourth post someone has told him to just use the search feature.

Hey, at least it wasn't a "which tuner for my lmm?" or "DPF questions" thread.
I swear that's 75% of the new threads started here. :D

I rememeber when I frist got on here I didnt know jack about a forum. I dont mind helping and pointing in the right direction. Im glad I didnt get treated the way I have seen some newbes get treated. I probily wouldnt came back.

That is my point! I try to do all the research I can before I ask a question, but sometimes it is just easier to ask. When you do ask questions it allows you to get familar with the site and people!

You're right and my apologies for coming across wrong.
Day after day, its the same questions, about the same things, all the time. Whats the best programmer? Whats the best intake or exhaust? Which gauges? Which fuel additive? Whats the best year truck? Will 285's fit on my truck? Whats your mileage? Help, I cant get over 2000 rpms! You get the idea.
When this guy posted this thread, there were 5 (yes 5) current threads on this exact thing. Some were called different things and they were places all over the place. Had he looked through this section, he would have seen at least 1 of them. The problem here is that there's so much information on this site and its buried. No one ever reads the sticky threads that were put there for a reason. No one reads the thread already in the section of your interest before posting anything.
I've been around here for a long time and as the years go on, the less tech thats discussed here. No one has the patients anymore to answer the questions that have been answered 10 fold, stemming back since 2003. Rest assured, if you can think of it, its been done, tried, failed, broken, fried, submerged, succeeded, won, dragged, sled pulled, boosted, you name it. There's nothing new. Anything and everything have been discussed, 10,000 times, in great detail.
We know what works. We know what dosent. We know the weak parts of these engines. We know how strong Allisons are. We know how much power it takes to fry one. We know how much power you can run through a stock motor without blowing holes through the pistons. We know that air intakes do exactly nothing for performance. We know who writes good tunes and who's to stay away from. We know which programmers are good bang for the bucks. We know what size tires you can squeeze onto stock rims. We know what kind of mileage YOU can expect with whatever programmer, on whatever generation engine. We know that you CAN remove a DPF and the truck will possible run correctly, without a tune. And we know that blocking these resonators does pretty much nothing.
Anyways, at least I provided him links to read through so he can get an idea of the length of discussion we've all had on these things over the years. Most people will just tell him to search. I told him what to search for and how to find it.

First of all I have thick skin and I do not mind being told to use the search feature. At the same time I did not know what I was looking for. I did not know it was called a resonator, or I would have looked, that is why I said it was an easy question. I am not new to diesel or forums. I am new to duramax. I have been reading a lot on this forum and had not run across this information. Also the links that you posted were not available except for one of them.
This engine is much more complicate that any diesel that I have ever seen. I will get used to it.
It is just irritating that my money will no longer purchase a simple reliable work truck.
Once again my problem and I will find a way around it.
thank you for the help it is appreciated.
jim
Unit453 01-28-2009, 10:27 PM Its no problem Jim. I've fixed the links if you havent noticed already.
I plugged the resonator on my 04 when I bought it new and I plugged my 07's as well the day after I brought it home. On a stock truck, it'll make the intake throatier. With an intake or exhaust, you wont hear a thing.

If there is nothing new to discuss and we all use the search feature successfully, then should there be no new posts?
I think the newbies like to talk about their trucks with other truck enthusiasts. They may not have the indepth knowledge to dream up something that has never been discussed before.

How funny!
NE_DMaxLBZ 02-01-2009, 11:22 AM i find it funny how someone will come into a thread and complain that is already been discussed xx amount of times, say to search ect. but they chose to click on the thread, they chose to read the topic, and they chose to reply (some quite extensively). this is the internet, isnt it. didnt know there were certian rules to follow and there were certain topics with allowable threads about it. as stated above, some people dont know what a part is called. some dont know how to search that great. its possible to search for an hour and not find it. last time i checked that is the point of forums and threads. to get and answer to YOUR specific question. next thing you know some "know it all" that has too valuable time to be clicking on your repeat post comes in and tells you to search and talks down to you. you have a choice here in the wide world web. you can go back and stop reading any thread you want. if you dont have anything good to say and help out find another thread. if i can get an answer in 5 minutes why would i spend an hour looking for it. oh yeah, i wouldnt.

I'll tell you why - spend two weeks in the shoes of a Moderator and you'll understand why. We just passed the 1/4 Million Threads mark this last week. When you think about that... and realize that maybe 1/4th of the threads opened some weeks are duplicates... then maybe you'll have an appreciation of the amount of work these "harmless" duplicate threads actually represents. It represents a lot of work, a lot of management, a lot of content to watch.
We don't mind people posting new threads... but when a simple search will turn up literally hundreds of threads discussing every possible aspect of a given topic, it becomes a little frustrating.

I just stated what I thought about the way some people come across about the search feature. I know what the search feature is and how to use it. I think I use very affect-fully. I think Unit did a very good job of helping the guy to get pointed in the right direction. I would think instead of just telling somebody to use the search feature, why not point the guy in the right direction by doing a search link (like Unit did) for him to help him out. I learn more from this people asking these simple questions then I ever will using the search feature. Because they will ask a question that haven't thought about or known about and I research it. I am new to a Duramax so I really don't know much about it. So when these guys ask questions it indirectly helps me out. I know it gets frustrating, but it what makes the world go round I guess.
I didn't really mean to touch a nerve just stated what I see from the outside looking in. I mostly just "Troll" and read posts. I stay on this site an average of about 4 hours a day off and on. I will go back to trolling now!
