: predator tuner
dncasey 04-05-2005, 07:54 PM I will be installing a predator tuner tomorrow thanks to the people at kennedy diesel. I have a 4" MBRP 304 exhaust and AFE Intake already. I drive mainly 60mph on level roads and want the best MPG available. What results have others had and at what hp settings? Any unusual problems?
Thanks for the input
Tim G. 04-05-2005, 09:16 PM I've only run mine for about 1 tank so far....
I went from a best of 15.5 to showing 21.... on the dash computer that is.
I did reprogram for the new tire size as well.
I cruise at 1900rpm on the highway....except to smoke some other truck...
I'm on the 65hp setting. It spins the back tires when it grabs second gear.:ro)
All I have is an AFE intake... Exhaust is stock..with the cat. I know, I know...
2500HD04 04-05-2005, 10:11 PM The first thing you will notice is the trans shifting odd. This is normal and will get better with time. I would look at getting gauges as the predator does run hot. I have seen temps up around 1300 just stomping it for a short burst. I did some towing over the weekend and was amazed at how fast the temp goes up when pulling up hill.
Welcome to the Place. The Place where you will go through money faster than at the poker table.
Reineke 04-05-2005, 10:24 PM I have the 65 hp installed and I drive about 500 miles per week ranging from cruising 70-75 mph (maxxed at 104 on the tank) several "WOT" moments and some city driving hand calculated out to 18.5 mpg's. the DIC said ~25, but it is way off now due to the program. Welcome to the place!
Kappa9012 04-05-2005, 10:33 PM can you access your fuel mileage calculator with/out the DIC? I have an LS not an LT, and was just curious.
_nar_ 04-06-2005, 12:36 AM Kappa9012-You can get the dic controls on LS trucks, it was an option. Mine has them. You are out of luck for accessing the other features unless you want to wire in a couple switches, or install the stock stuff to do it. Here's a link that talks about both:

dncasey 04-06-2005, 05:55 AM Thanks for the information. I will try it at 65 hp setting after getting the tranny
broken in. The truck has 22k miles so far without problems (bite your tongue)
cowdoc 04-06-2005, 09:29 AM I did some towing over the weekend and was amazed at how fast the temp goes up when pulling up hill.
How much weight were you towing? How high did the egt's get? How steep were the grades? What altitude?
The reason I am asking all these questions is because I routinely tow 3000-4000 lbs with the predator @ 65 hp. I know I need gauges but my wallet won't let me just yet.
Future upgrades will include both gauges and a 4" exhaust. But until then............................................:c onfused:
Thanks!
2500HD04 04-06-2005, 07:14 PM I was towing 16 ft enclosed trailer about 4 or 5 k loaded to the dump, egt's up to 1200 to 1300 going up a average hill nothing huge maybe 1 mile up the hill set on 65 tune. This was my first real tow and did not know what to expect. Outside temp was around 70. Can some one tell me how long you can stay at these temps before you should back out.
coyotekid 04-06-2005, 07:55 PM Speaking strictly mileage, I've found that I'm able to get the same mileage cruising for long periods at highway speeds with the Predator set to kill as I did with a bone stock engine.
Now in town is another story...
I'd say your best bet is to just see for yourself--the beauty of the Predator is that it can be easily removed, modified, and does much more than just add power. I've heard of VERY few people that regret getting one. The price is a bargain in the performance arena.
sammy 04-07-2005, 10:57 PM I have only had my pred for a few weeks, and have ran level 2 & 3. I plan on keeping it at level 2 just to keep the tranny in check. With the pred, my DIC mpg showed 19, while actual was 14 (in town & winter blend fuel yet).
I adjusted my tire size to the 265/75/16, but speedo was off according to my hand-held GPS. I set the tire size at 275/75/16 in the pred, and the speedo is now right on.
turbov6joe 04-08-2005, 01:22 AM I just got mine today and was reading through the destruction booklet. In the suplement picture of the fuse panel for the LLY it says to remove the 3 fuese before starting to program...but unless I'm overlooking it, I don't see where it says when to put the fuses back in....am I to assume correctly it's after the process is done and before starting? Do I have to reinstall the factory programming before jumping from say level 2-3?? TIA
dwrat 04-08-2005, 01:27 AM You really don't need to pull any fuses at all. Just make sure the radio is off, and everything for that matter is off. It worked fine that way for me. (no on-star on my truck). You can go from tune to tune as you wish. If you go back to stock, that is what takes so much time. If you go from 40 to 60 or 85 it just takes a minute.

dncasey 04-08-2005, 05:57 AM Installed the Predator yesterday. Pretty staight forward. I did pull the fuses as per instructions. No big deal.. I am running the 65hp tune. The tranny is acting strange but getting better after 100 miles commute yesterday. DIC said 26 MPG. Wouldn't that be great if it was true.

Cow doc I towed a Z71 on a 24' gooseneck the other day about 40 miles or so over 9% plus grades and it got hot pretty quick 1400+ on one occasion so I kept baking out of it after that. I was towing on the 40HP setting with stock exhaust. the truck was maybe running 1500 to 1800 rpms to keep the temps in check I down shifted to 3rd a couple of times and limped on up the hills at 40mph to 45 mph...New exhaust is in the works hopefully that will help. I highly suggest getting a pyro gauge asap If you are towing at all
04ROB 04-08-2005, 08:21 AM My pred makes the engine rattle more than I care to listen to. I plan on getting a reflash then reinstalling

wwpiga 04-08-2005, 09:36 AM I installed mine on tuesday and took a trip (no towing).
Hand calculated gained 3 miles per gallon on 65HP setting for 400 miles. (DIC showed 29 MI/gal running at 75 Miles/hr)
At 3 mi/gal gain with todays prices the savings in fuel will pay for the predator in 16753 miles.
My transmission is still learning. I guess because the trip was all interstate I will need more stop and go for the trans to settle down.
ssgreg 04-08-2005, 10:21 AM So what was your MPG at 75 mph?
MiDmax 04-08-2005, 10:26 AM :) I've had the Predator in for approx. 2 weeks and love it. I am concerned about pulling my 5ver though. I'm currently running the 65HP setting and I'm very impressed. I don't race my truck but love the power, when I want it. What do you guys see for EGT's when pulling some weight (8000-9000)lbs. on the tow mode (40HP)?
I'd love to see some replies and I'm sure it would help others too!!!!;)
Mike_in_Wisc 04-08-2005, 10:48 AM Also got the Predator a couple weeks ago. J. Kennedy is close enough I drove up there, loaded 40Hp in his driveway and headed back. 135 miles oneway. Filled up before left home. It took between 1/4 and half tank to get there. Got back home on just needle width over 1/4 tank. That's a improvement :D
John said the tranny would shift wierd for awhile. Had to go through three little towns to get back to the interstate. With all that up and down shifting the Alli learning curve made my Alli look like a friggin' genius. Got to the interstate, shut down for ten minutes (Pee break). Got back on the road and that Alli knew :exactly: what it was there for and how to do it :cool2: Learning done. :ro)
The MPG is noticebly better. Been running 17.5 MPG average daily on winter blend. The last two tanks was 18.8 and 19.0. Thats 60 miles daily 55 to 65 MPH to work and back. When summer blend gets up here, should look even better.
Wolford 04-08-2005, 11:35 AM The VVT on the LLY can handle 1250 all day long. When I pull I start backing off around 1325 and try to keep it below 1300.
sammy 04-08-2005, 05:44 PM I had a trip to St.Cloud today which is about 120 miles round trip(flat interstate). I ran level 3 on the pred on the way up, and had about 650 on the egt. with cruise at 75mph.
I put the stock tune in on the way back and had 800-850 on the gauge. I assume the difference is that I was coming back into a head-wind and pushing lots of air. My tranny shifts got real firm back on the stock tune while it is trying to "re-learn". Although it will not have much time for re-learning, pred tune is going right back in!! Did not take long for me to miss the extra throttle response!
bartman 04-08-2005, 09:02 PM :) I've had the Predator in for approx. 2 weeks and love it. I am concerned about pulling my 5ver though. I'm currently running the 65HP setting and I'm very impressed. I posted on this a couple weeks back, but pulling a 14,500lb toyhauler 5th wheel to Moab, Utah and back I regularly saw EGT's in the 1300 degree range going up the steeper hills. Cruising at 70 mph on level ground was around 950-1000 degrees pre-turbo. I was really impressed with the power, but may consider water-meth injection to keep the egts at bay. I had to back out of the throttle several times because the egt gauge would climb to 1300 too quickly. I would definitely recommend gauges and a 4" or larger exhaust to keep the egts in check.
turbov6joe 04-09-2005, 12:32 AM Got mine programed today on the 65HP setting and was immediately impressed with the extra power. The crazy transmission shifting was pretty scarey though...seems to be getting better as we speak. I couldn't believe how much smoke this power level makes, my 2003 CTD NEVER rolled smoke like this on its highest setting??? I have a 7000lb trailer I'll be towing with it and should really like the extra power and mpg. I lost my muffler the second day I had the truck but the cat is still in place. The dealer said if they see the cat removed they will not do any warranty work that even remotely related to the cat. The service manager did say he didn't care about intakes, lift kits, or cat back systems...just the federal parts:( I noticed the other day that my exhaust seems to sound different on cycles....one minute it has a good rumble, the next it sounds like its weezing....is this the EGR cycling? Can I unplug that thing without screwing anything up?

dncasey 04-09-2005, 07:49 AM I put about 300 miles on the truck this week with the Predator at 65hp setting.
The tranny if shifting normally again at my usual 55-60 mph single lane driving. The extra power and increased mph are great. I have had numerous sports cars including a Porsche 911, 928, BMW 530 and 540, Corvette 96 convertable,'04 Z350. This is as much fun as any of them to be in a big 4X4 with lots of room and so many available utility functions. I love this truck.
MiDmax 04-15-2005, 02:29 PM Thanks for the reply Bartman..... Did you have the Predator on 40 or 65 setting?
I'm still working on getting some pillar gauges from dmaxalliTech. I'm either going to get his  or order something like the Autometer Phantoms.
