Don't know if this is the right place to ask or not but since the truck has a 6.5, thought I'd try here first. Has anyone here done a 2 WD to 4 WD conversion? How much trouble would it actually be?

alot it would be easier to swap your 6.5 into a 4x4 truck

It is possible to do a SAS (solid axle swap) if you are capable. There are some kits available for the job, but I agree, it would be just as easy to swap the 6.5 over to a gas engine truck. Another option would be to swap your body and engine/drivetrain to a 4x4 chassis. Also, you will need to find a 4WD version 4L80E and transfer case (or NV4500 manual), and the necessary wiring to make it all work. The ECM should be changed also, and modifications to your ABS system. It would be a lot of work.

I figured it would be too much trouble, but in doesn't hurt to ask.

Thanks

It would be WAY easier to do a SAS than to try to make the IFS 4x4.

I disagree, all of the opitions mentioned above should all be bolt in, remove and replacements, with very little "make your own fit stuff". The key point would be having donor truck or chassis. And some where to do the work where it could sit for awhile. Not a weekend project thats fer sure, and yes, before I get jumped, some of the swaps would be easier than others.

If you're having the tranny rebuild anyway then it's not a big deal to swap tailshafts or
You could always run a divorced Tcase like they used to use on the old 1ton full time 4wd trucks. This is the setup also if you were going to run a gear splitter and Tcase.

QM, you mention a gear splitter and I know you have a 93 just like mine. Have you run a splitter on our trucks? What kind of RPM's did you have and at what speed? Did you notice a significant increase in MPG? Thanks

sure, the trans, and transfer case would be easy to swap in, but the 4x4 trucks have different suspension mounts in the front.
