: need advice on perormance upgrades
I just bought an 02 dmax 4x4 crew cab with the allison. My previous truck was a dodge diesel with an edge ez, bigger injectors, 4" exhaust, guages, ae maga cannon air filter. Needles to stay my dodge ran circles around the dmax since it was modded but I think the dmax would take the dodge stock.
Anyway I am looking to soup up my new truck. I drive about 40k miles a year with half of those pulling a trailer. I am not into racing or anything but I want as much power as I can get with in reason and without the need to do any other drivetrain mods.
What do you recommend - Edge Juice, Exhaust, Intake?
Diesel Power 04-05-2005, 01:25 PM Hi,
Please do a search as this has been discussed hundreds of times. id' suggest searching for "Edge Juice", "Exhaust", "Intake"
ratlover 04-05-2005, 02:26 PM Either a TTS tow or economy tune or and EDGE juice if you like the bells and wistles of the attitude IMO. Both have very good programing. Or if you want to spend less cash you can get other brands and it will add power and do ok also. Get some exhaust that you like the sound of. No need to get an intake for your application IMO.
McRat 04-05-2005, 03:05 PM What you NEED, is just a 50-80rwhp tune. There are at least a dozen brands out.
You will be STUNNED at the difference. Don't be too suprised if even a 50HP tune makes you forget about the Dodge. A 50 horse tune will make the Dmax just as quick (actually quicker) as an SS Silverado, and will shave 2 seconds or more off your 1/4mi times. It will allow you to tow up most mountains without downshifting.
Which is best? My personnel taste leans towards the TTS tunes which tend to be smoother than the others. But Edge, Banks, Hypertech, Superchips, Predator, Van Aaken, Quad, Bully Dog, Etc, etc, etc, all have their following as well.
Scotty Seelen 04-06-2005, 04:48 PM A 50hp tune will make it run as quick as a Silverado SS - don't think so.
ratlover 04-06-2005, 04:55 PM Not if your running a banks tune:p:
Ok, sorry I couldnt resist. Nothing wrong with banks:blahblah: :D
Ridge Runner 04-06-2005, 05:09 PM IMHO Edge Juice/Attitude:ro)

September? 2004 California Speedway, I ran my friends bone stock SS Silverado 345HP AWD. Like taking candy from a baby. Ran 15.42 using just the TTS Tow at California Speedway to his 15.6? IIRC. Don't have my logbook here.
John DiMartino 04-06-2005, 05:31 PM McRat,itll take more than a 50hp tune to forget about the Dodge. His Dodge was set up for pulling torque,i doubt a 90hp tune will give him what the Dodge had below 2300,which is all a Dodge ever needs to tow.I know once above that the Dmax will show its power, but the Edge EZ and a stage 2 injector is a leathal towing setup.bdog, id get an edge jiuce, the only thing is I have had to send back a few, they seem to last about 2 years and they fail.Edge is great about the warranty, and they have taken care of every one,but due to that i have been using the Bully Dog tuners lately, mostly the 50 and 80hp tunes, the run great, you can compensate for tires, and remove speed limits.Id then do a 4" exhaust, and drop in filter.
McRat 04-06-2005, 05:36 PM You really need to drive a Dmax with a mild tune. It wakes them right up. Far better throttle response, more grunt, and a lot more fun to drive. Seriously.
IBDMAX'IN 04-06-2005, 05:56 PM I'll take anyone for a ride if they like, they just have to show up, sit down, shut up and hold on.
I haven't had any daily driven dodges give me a decent run for my money YET, heck I have'nt even had one that had twins with a TS program and injectors come close even without the nitrous!!! (don't know why, maybe turned the boost down??)
I'm not knocking the sheep dog, I'm just glad you saw the light and bought a d-max!!!
Forgot to add this: :stirthepo :stirthepo
John DiMartino 04-06-2005, 08:34 PM Trust me ive loaded a ton of tunes, and installed many boxes,I know how they run.I v'e got 2 stacked, they run great. You need to drive a Dodge with an Edge EZ and set of Don M step 2s,and hook up a good sized trailer.I know the Dmax will beat one all out,its the low end that cant be matched,it also makes the Dodge feel very strong(whic it is),but more so than its peak HP number,if that makes any sense.:exactly:
staticx04 04-06-2005, 08:55 PM I have the edge and i couldn't be happier. I switch between 1 and 3. I get 23 mpg on 1 on the highway. And for one it has some good pickup good for just daily driving. And the 3 is good for playing around. and one thing i noticed is when i put my afe stage 2 on i seem to have lost alittle punch from the start. And if i could go back i would have just ran a drop in. But the edge compensated alittle for the lost pick up. So basically i bought the afe for the whislen dixie. Which is so sweet to the ears.

I understand, there is nothing that can stand up to the feel of a inline on the bottom end. It's just like when I take my ricer burner friends for rides in my truck, sure their Eclipse GSX runs 12's, but as soon as they ride in a 7,000lb truck that does the same it feels 100times as powerful. this is what they usually look like........... ...............;)
Thanks for the replies guys. I bought a juice/attitude today and got everything installed except the pyro. Thought I had a 1/8" tap but I don't so I will have to pick one up tomorrow. I did a test run and was impressed but I am being cautios and not towing until I get the pyro connected. Also today I stopped by the muffler shop and had them whack the muffler. On my dodge I could justify going from 3" stock pipe to 4" but since the chevy has 3.5" I opted just to chop the muffler and save the $$ for other mods.
McRat 04-06-2005, 10:17 PM Kill the Kitty. Put on Finger Stick to stop codes.
jnieberlein 04-07-2005, 02:09 AM Its a 02 there is no kitty, I think all those diesel fumes from the track have gone to your head:joke: . McRat congrats on all your good race N. Static are you serious 23mpg is that from the DIC or Hand? They must not have any hills in that part of MD
Scotty Seelen 04-07-2005, 07:33 AM Completely stock Silverado SS's run consistant 15.1's at Brainerd International Speedway in Minnesota.
sdaver 04-07-2005, 08:10 AM thousand one thousand two .....where is the ss ...oh here he is......
Scotty Seelen 04-07-2005, 08:24 AM It's really a shame they upgraded the SSR pickup from 300hp to 390hp, but kept their performance truck, the Silverado SS, at 345hp. Some things GM does just doesn't make sense. Ok, enough about the SS.

We are not blessed a "fast" track that we have access to in SoCal. SS's run mid 15's here at 2000' DA. Not to mention that most Dmaxes weigh less than CC/LB, which improves their ET even more.
Errr... until you remove the Torque Management. Then they go faster.
As far as the SS being underpowered? Perhaps. But it is the only "usable" sport truck. It actually tows, and will carry 4 people, and has AWD. Not a bad truck, just no Lightning either.

speak for your own dmax....mine fits that definition:ro)
Scotty Seelen 04-07-2005, 12:39 PM I agree on it being usable. That's why I still have my Sierra C3. Basically the same truck, but with a 325hp 6.0L. It still remains one of Car & Driver's all time favorite pickups. The dealer about 2 blocks away just took delivery of a black SRT-10 Dodge, very sweet, but not a do-it-all pickup like the SS or C3.

Yeah, but only us sicko's consider a 3/4 ton 4x4 7000lb diesel a "Sport Truck"! :D
dieselmaniac 04-08-2005, 07:04 AM Most people can't understand what drives us to want a 7200lb 21ft long pickup to be able to blow the doors off a mustang GT or my favorite, those little ricer pieces of crap. my general response is cause its awesome and because i can. all of us like smokin a ford but i'd rather see the look on some punk in a civic with an annoying exhaust and huge rims. leave him in a black cloud of smoke.
Zorganov 04-08-2005, 07:58 AM LMAO, amen dieselmaniac!!! :ro) :muahaha:
