Max Power 04-05-2005, 12:20 PM With the MBRP single 4" exhaust do you have to cut the tail pipe to put on the tip?
I think I'd rather not run the tip at all buy maybe once the exhaust starts looking rusted (409) I might consider a tip. I would definately want to take the tip off for the winter so would I have a stubby tail pipe?
coyotekid 04-05-2005, 12:24 PM So you're worried about the tip rusting?
I think the tips MBRP offers are 304, so they probably won't rust?
Max Power 04-05-2005, 12:25 PM Maybe not but it I imagine it would corrode to a certain extent. I've never seen anything hold up well to the salt around here.
WYO_DMAX 04-05-2005, 12:31 PM I didn't have to cut the pipe to get the tip where I wanted it. And from what I remember, it would have looked good without the tip too.
coyotekid 04-05-2005, 12:35 PM Oh, I didn't realize you got that much salt up there Max. Luckily, not much salt is used around here. From my experience in this area, most of the higher quality stainless won't rust around here. It takes a really long time for even 409 to rust around here.
DSTRBD 04-05-2005, 12:56 PM You can run the MBRP system without a tip. It will exit at almost the exact same place as the stock system and the same length.
Max Power 04-05-2005, 01:01 PM I understand you can run it without the tip, I want to know if you need to cut some off for the tip to look right.

More than likely you'll have to cut a bit off........if i remember, i think i had to cut 3-4 inhces off, as i didn't want to see the 4" inside of the tip out that far. Don't worry about the salt on the tip..........trust me, mine looks no different that the day i put it on, other than the gravel marks on the underside......and trust me, we have alot of salt on our roads, as the yuppies don't like to drive on a road if theres snow on it:mad: , ask Eric how my truck looked on the underside or engine compartment, looks like its 10 years old easily-:t
Max Power 04-05-2005, 01:14 PM Thanks HBC. I actually like the look without the tip. The perfect situation for me would be if I didn't have to cut any off but I don't want it to look silly either. Cutting is so irreversible.
bartman 04-05-2005, 02:21 PM Maxpower,
I have the 409 on my truck (dually) and I didn't have to cut the pipe. However, let me warn you, the 409 turns pretty golden after it encounters some heat from a heavy tow (I'll try to post a picture of what I mean) I have a single wall rolled tip slash cut tip that is made of 304 and it still looks beautiful. I think if you want to run no tip and not worry about any surface rust, then go with the 304 single system. On a SRW truck you may have to trim a little off.
Turbotug 04-05-2005, 02:48 PM I cut about 4" off the end of mine just for the look at the time. I have my tip adjusted out to the edge of my tire, you would not be able to see the pipe even if I left it alone. I think you would be OK to leave it the stock length, once it gets all sooty inside you wont see it anyway.
If that makes any sense to you.
DEEZL72 04-05-2005, 03:00 PM You have to be careful trimming the end off of the MBRP tailpipe though! The end is flared slightly. When I did my install, I measured where I wanted my tip to sit, which was tucked up nice and tight to the fender, and proceeded to cut with a sawzall. No problem until I disccovered that what I had just trimmed was all of the flare that the tip clamp was to grasp. Fortunately I have equipment at my shop to fix this, ):h but the average user probably would have been left with a rather stubby tailpipe install and no provisions to attach the rather nice looking MBRP tip.
The moral of the story is, You cannot clamp the tip to the regular 4" pipe.
Max Power 04-05-2005, 07:06 PM Thanks for the advice DEEZL72. I ended up getting the 409 but I think I will regret not going with the 304.
nwpadmax 04-05-2005, 08:25 PM I ended up getting the 409 but I think I will regret not going with the 304.
Gad, Max, you sound so married http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
TheBac 04-05-2005, 10:03 PM Yeah, he sounds so.................responsible...............all of a sudden! ):h
Max, I've got the 409 system. Yes, it gets spotted up once the salt hits it. Yes, mine looks like a leopard print exhaust now. I cut 4 inches off the tailpipe to install the tip. If I wouldn't have, the tip would have stuck out too far.
Tom
Max Power 04-06-2005, 12:32 AM ):h
Chisuzu 04-06-2005, 12:38 AM I have the duals on mine and didn't cut anything when I put on the tips. When it was cherry new you could see a little pipe if you looked directly in there, but once you run down the road, the tips are filled with soot, so all you see is black.
