funny you bring this up the other day i noticed the same thing i put in in 5th before passing a car so it would not have so much drop and lag i forgot to put in back into drive and drove it a good 35 miles at 60 i just filled up and reset - i looked down and saw 19.1 and freaked - i reset and drove back in drive same route at same speed i was down to 17.8 -- 60 all the way - I do have bigger tires gets better mileage at 1800 rpm doing 60 than 1500 rpm doing 60

Doesn't regen when in manual mode ???? Drive too long like that and you might get a "clean DPF now" message??

I would tend to disagree on this one!

I think the truck is lugging more in 6th gear @ 60 than in 5th. When in 5th @ lower speeds the engine wouldn't be working as hard. Kinda like overheating and drop a gear and the engine then cools down, even though it is running at a higher RPM.

Peak torque is 1600 RPM and should be most efficient there, which is 60 MPH in 6th on my rig.

:confuzeldI dont know why anyone would do this. Why not buy a man.tranny. At 10,000 miles I get 16 mpg towing a 3500 pound loaded lawnmower trailer: 14 mpg on a 12,000 pound.5er: 21mpg solo. All at 65mph. That is on paper. Not on AMG on the DIC. This is pretty good on a 6.6 liter diesel. But it is yours. Drive it like you chose. Go Figure. :confuzeld

The only time I noticed better mpg locked in 5th gear is when I am pulling a 8K + size load. Then it helps my mileage a lot!

also it has alot to do with 5th gear being "direct drive"...just my 2 cents

With 33s or smaller your not lugging the engine in 6th. There are a few long city street here that you can hit every light at 45-50 mph and I get better MPG taking those roads in 6th then 5th. Watching your boost and pyro will tell how to drive to get the best mileage.

sorry thought 5th would be direct drive in a 6 speed...but 4th is direct drive so the input shaft is turning at the same speed at the output shaft
