I am just wondering when everyone is changing there front diff fluid?I slacked off a bit and forgot about it.I just changed it, my truck has almost 80000kms on it and the fluid looked like crap:eek: I only use 4wd in winter did not think i had that many kms while using it. Well any info on time and or kms (or miles) would be appreciated thanks:D

Define "looks like crap". Kinda yellowish? If you search, it's pretty normal. It's the lube they put on at the factory.

If "looks like crap" is something else, then you have exceeded my knowledge :D

ETA, I changed mine at like 10k, but I'm pretty anal and wanted to put my own synthetic in it with the correct amount of fluid in both the diffs.

Ya yellowish to white first thought was water in it. I am p#@ed at myself for not doing it earlier,it is not like it is expensive.I am thinking of changing it in the spring and then in the fall, that is prob 15000-20000kms between changes.thanks:)

I only use 4wd in winter

For proper lubrication it is recommended that 4WD is engaged for at least a few miles once a month.

i usually do that what i meant when i said i only use it in the winter is it can be engaged anywhere from 20-100kms

That is probably a bit excessive....You change your engine oil that often, mostly because it picks up contaminants/soot you want to get rid of, it gets diluted with water and fuel, and it "uses up" the additive packages. In a diff, granted you have no filter, but you have no combustion byproduct and soot to get rid of. There aren't even clutch debris.

The only thing you really need to change it for would be to remove any metal on metal wear shavings or possibly if you like to submerge it in water often.

But, take my opinion for what you paid for it.

I changed both front and rear lube at 15,000 miles. The rear was very dirty with wear metal, and the front much less. However, I found the rear only half filled with factory oil. This seems to be a common complaint. Refilled both with Amsoil 75W-90 Severe Gear Synthetic. Takes about 6.5 quarts for both.

On the truck that I have now I changed it the first time at about 800 kms, I paper toweled 99% of the metal out and then changed it at 160,000 km's The oil was only slightly brown. So I was quite happy with it. That first oil change is very important, to remove the metal . I greased and checked all the oil levels on the 09 before I took it off the lot to drive it. I do pump the grease out of the u-joints to remove the water and contaminates.

Proper level is most important IMHO. If level is right they sched maintenance for diff changes is up over 70k miles or so. I changed mine earlier cause I wanted to fill with syn 75W-90 and did it same time I did my rear. Dont remember exactly, but probably around 24000 or so. Rear with G80 locker should have been done sooner as a "break in" change is recommended, but I got lazy. Shame on me. However, rear was very nasty with metal shaving in in on plug. Front was much better, but level was low from GM, surprise.

You should be fine and I wouldn't change it again for quite some time. I check my levels about every other or third oil change .

changed my rear at 5k, again at 40k. Front done at 30k, Rear looked a lot worse than the front. Transmission done at 20k and changed to transynd. Engine oil is mobil delvac esp 1 5w40 synthetic and changed every 5k. Transfer case change with dex 6 at 30k.
