Just had the bearings in the column replaced on my '83 GMC 2500 and now the steering doesn't "spring" back to straight like it used to. I mean when you go around a corner, a lot of times you might just let go of the wheel and let it straighten itself out mostly - well, mine used to but not after the fix. Is that something that will loosen up? Can I "fix" it? really bugs me.

If you disconnect the steering shaft from the steering box, does the steering wheel freewheel. If I had to hazard a guess (and I will), it sounds as if the upper column bearing was installed incorrectly, BUT only if the wheel has resistance when disconnected from the steering. Many other parts in the system can contribute to poor return to center performance, including the alignment, and the steering box preload, to mention a few.
Many times, especially on older trucks, the steering box preload will be adjusted by seasoned mechanics to lessen on-center play. But many "seasoned" mechanics don't know how to do it right, resulting in poor return-to-center performance.

Well, I'm not a "real" mechanic. I don't think I'm about to go playing with the preload adjustment. I could disconnect the column from the box and see what that gets me. I think I'll just take it back now that you said it could be something wrong... of course i fully expect them to tell me "it'll loosen up."
