I just took my truck into the dealer this morning. My speedometer is going out, which I expect will be replaced on GM's dime without a problem. The other issue is my starter/flexplate. When the truck had about 17,000 miles I took it to them stating that the starter was not engaging the flex plate and making a terrible grinding noise. Since the problem was intermittent, they could not duplicate or diagnose the problem. They would not fix it without being able to duplicate the problem. Not the truck has 60K miles and the stater problems has progressed enough that they should be able to duplicate the problem.

My question is whether this should be covered under warranty. I feel that it should because it has been documented long before any warranty expired. The service manager didn't sound to optimistic that GM would cover it. Did I wait too long to get it back into the shop? Any help in making them fix it would be appreciated.

If it was documented before, they should cover it. It will all depend on the service mgr. Has it been in more than once for the problem?

It was documented. I didn't want to waste my time taking the truck in becuase it didn't do it often enough that it was likely to produce the problem for the tech. Now it has progessed to where it does it about twice a week, so they should be able to reproduce the problem. The problem was definatley there within the warrany period.

The dealer acted like they weren't interested it going to bat for me with GM. I think I need a new dealer if they don't fix under warranty. Anyone know of a good dealer in Portland, OR?

Well, The dealer says they will not cover either issue under warranty. I am on hold right now with GM Customer service to see if I can resolve the issue. So far they seem to be symethetic to my claim, but have yet to give me an answer.

Any one out there ever deal with fixing a problem that was documented but not repaired during the warranty period. It really seems to me that they should be fixing it.

You are better off fixing it yourself. At least it will be fixed properly! Warranty is a JOKE

Not that this will help you now........
All those intermittent problems that the dealer can't duplicate I make sure it is listed on the paperwork and mention it everytime I take it in, that way you have documentation that its been an issue.

In your situation the service manager may be your only option but, keep in mind he/she will be doing it on the dealers dime. I had issues with a 2004 PSD and a new service manager took over service he understood my dilema and while Ford did nothing he ate a $350 (cut me a check and mailed it to me) bill from several months ago and covered a ball joint replacement for $50. The ball joints he covered on the flip of a quarter heads, he paid and tails I paid nothing.

He lost but, would only take $50 for the ball joint replacement. I told him I wasn't trying to get something for nothing.

He was miles ahead of everyone else there, he understood customer service and loyalty. I kept the truck as long as I could keep affording repair bills then finally dumped it and got a Chevy (which I should have done in the first place).

You might try another dealeer and see if you could find a good service manager.

Dave, Here's my story.

My truck would not start one day about a month ago. had to be flat bedded to the dealership ( 46K on this truck at that time ). Dealer called and said it was the starter and didn't think it was covered under the GM 100K power train warranty. Later Service writer called to tell me it was done, then also said he had checked with GM and the starters are covered under the PTW so cost me $100. You need to try a different dealer, Good luck!

I just got off the phone with the dealership. They will now cover both the starter and the flex plate under the 100K engine warranty.

Still no luck on the speedometer, but I can either live with that or do the DIY fix.

There is no way I will be back at this dealership for service or a new purchase, so if anyone has a good suggestion for a dealer in Portland i'd appreciate it.

Isn't their a service bulletin for the speedometer stepper motor issue. As a result of a class action suit, I believe the warrenty on it was extended to 75K. I remember getting a notice on it.
