I have a 97 2500 with the 6.5, while using the cruse it will just quit working, if I shut it off for about 2 minutes it will work again for a while, sometimes for 1/2 hour, sometimes just a few minutes. my question is if anyone has had this problem or what part of the cruse could more than likely be causing the problem, just looking for some direction on what to check first to hopefully fix this problem
Thanks Blaine

It is one of 2 things. It is either the cruise control lever or the stepper motor under the hood. Most GM dealerships should have a kent moore tool that plugs into the system at the stepper motor and tests the lever, brake switch etc.

The easiest way to do a quick check is to drive down the road with your cruise set and try to tilt the steering wheel, turn the turn signals on etc. Just wiggle thr turn signal around as much as you can. If you get it to quit with any of those things you know it is probably the lever.

I had the same problem and mine was the turn signal lever. The little wires just get old. Bought one at autozone for cheap and have had no problems since. It is however, a PITA to change out. Good luck!

For a 97 the lever is a lot more money the a 93.

Even still, it sucks to drive any distance without it!

Thanks BlaineIf it continues after you replace the switch it's the pmd.

Any codes coming up in memory? Some codes knock out cruise . . . but haven't heard it come back before like that. I think QM's huntin' down the right trail.

Thanks for all your replies, last night and this morning I moved the signal lever around and tilted the steering wheel and the cruse stayed on, had the codes checked and there was no codes in memory, one thing I have read is if a pmd is going bad there might be "surging" if there is anything else I have notice on my truck is when I drive with the cruse on it seems to surge, it has been kinda windy so I always thought it was just the wind and maybe it is just the wind, I have also notice my mpg has gone down some, would replacing the lever still be the first step? I believe the pmd is still factory and I have 120,000 miles on the truck

Usually if it is the lever you can make the cruise quit by moving it around.

Not trying to jump in on the thread but my cruise in the 95 works but has no resume function or accel function, just up and quit one day, wiggling the switch has no effect. PMD has around 250,000 km's on it.

CR, my resume/accel switch was TU also, it was the contacts inside it. Somegun to replace.
