05 LLY. Which remote start system should I purchase? Thanks in advance for the input.

I put a Crimestopper 1905 and GM SL2 Bypass (now obsolete) on my 05 and it works great, but there are many very nice ones available now. I am installing an Omega AL-2000_EDP in my son's 2002 Silverado right now. It is loaded with features for the price.

Depending on what year model truck (2003 and up), you can use a bypass module to control just about everything through the data bus at the OBDII port.

I actually made a spreadsheet for my 05 that has all the wiring information for the install. You can go the the12volt forum and it is in the download section.

I like using installing DEI stuff, they make Viper,Clifford and others. GM uses DEI for their remote start systems. Here's a Link http://www.directed.com/Default.aspx

I've had my Viper LCD remote start for 3 years now. It always works perfectly. Mine has a 1 mile range:cool:. It tells you if your doors are locked and if the truck is running via LCD key fob. I would HIGHLY recommend a Viper.

Thanks for the feedback. Going with the Viper or Clifford. Pretty much the same animal. Now I just need to find some "competent" installer. I dont need to have Bevis doing a hack job.

The Clifford and the Viper are the same, just depends on which remote u like. Actually there interchangeable. Only thing that sux, at least to me is that the remotes eats up battery power like crazy. But like other guy said ^^^ it has the 1 mile range so not bad trade off. I also like to get the remote windows(up and down)

Make sure the installer uses a good bypass module. One good one is the Fortin INT-SL. It will control a lot of stuff through the vehicle data bus, including door locks, heated seats, rear defrost mirrors etc. Also elimimates a lot of wiring.

A very good resource for this subject is "the12volt.com" forums.

If you want to maintain the priority driver door unlock feature, you need to make sure the remote start has this capability. (I mentioned this because I didn't think about it when I did mine, so now I don't have that feature anymore).

One other thing to consider is the quality of the transmitters. Some have a very short battery life. That is the only complaint I have about the Crimestopper I put in my truck. The 2 way transmitter started eating batteries and then died after about 2 years of use. Even though the remote start has never given me a problem, I wouldn't recommend the Crimestopper line unless they have improved their transmitters.

The Fortin GM-SL2 I used in my truck works fine for the Passlock bypass, but it doesn't control the heated seats like it said it would. Door lock/unlock, parking lights, horn all work fine through the OBDII port. The INT-SL is supposed the replace the GM-SL2 and the heated seat problem is supposed to be fixed. I can't answer about any INT-SL problems because I don't have one. Those guys on the 12volt forum probably know since alot of them are installers.

I am currently working on installing an Omega remote start system in my son's truck. We are going to use an Omega (XK06 PLXR) bypass for this install.

Can anyone answer this question? I have a 2008 Chevy 2500HD. It is pre wired for remote start. Does anyone know what's involved with installing the OEM remote start system?

I spoke to a friend of mine at a Chevy dealer about installing a remote starter system. He told me the dash has to be removed. It's about a 4 hour job at the dealer. This was for the OEM remote start system with the truck pre wired.

I've installed numerous systems into these trucks. In and out, washed up and on to the next vehicle ALOT quicker than that. However, the install into a 07-08 NBS is NOT a DIY. Many things that can go wrong and cause the PK3+ security to trip. Big PITA!.
You should be able to add an aftermarket market unit to the factory one but would still need a TEch II to activate it. I wouldn't go with the factory unit. 2 x 10min warmup times only before cycling the key and limited range.
In the end it's still your call.

Hows the install difficulty on an older body style? As in Pre-07.

For a pretty mechanically/electrically inclined DIY'er.

Next to the new Ford's and Dodge's, those trucks are the easiest trucks on the market to do. A straight remote start install c/w doorlocks takes me around an hour to do. A DIY with the proper instructions could pull it off in an afternoon.

I mean i installed my gauges and my whole sound system with amps, head unit, speakers, and subs myself. How does it compare to running wiring like that?

On a 2005 year model Chevy, if you get a remote start unit and a compatible bypass that communicates through the data port and the bypass controls everything through the vehicle data bus (OBDII port) there is very little wiring to do. I also got the GM-12 T-harness from JVS (Bulldog security) so that takes care of the power wiring from the ignition switch to the remote start unit. My particular install I had to hard-wire from the bypass to the remote start unit, but everything else is controlled through the OBDII port (except the brake signal and tach).

You won't have any problems with the proper instructions.

Where does that splice into the OBDII?

Pin #2 which is a purple wire. Just attach to it. No cutting and splicing required.

Yes, the purple wire (Pin 2 OBDII Connector) like Saskpuller said. It is easy to get to, just remove the 7mm screw and the connector will drop down for easy access.
