Alright guys...New to the site but not to trucks!
Just got my new dodge last week: 2005 Ram 2500 SLT Quad Cab 4x4 Diesel HO
Looking to upgrade it with a plethora of mods and performance enhancers and I wanted to know, since most of you have already been testing alot of the various equipment out there, which way to go?
Let me give you an idea of what I am looking to do:
Of course electronics are definitely in...Edge, Banks, PPE, etc?So far my research tells me PPE programmers offer the most bang for the buck, but I could be wrong.
SS turbo back exhaust system...I was looking at the MBRP Cool Duals 4" Turbo Back system...Twin pipes shot out the back under the rear bumper look nice.
A new air intake system and torque tube...maybe AFE or Airaid?
Banks High Ram Intake or ATS Arc Flow seems like it could do some good as well.
There it is so far...Any questions, comments or suggestions will be much appreciated and taken into consideration...
Hit me with your best shot!!!

Start with an exhaust and a mild tuner, or an adjustable tuner.

Edge probably has the best customer service in the industry. In general, their products are very good.

Understand that if you ramp up to big power, you will have to go transmission/clutch shopping.

first off the cummins is the toughest engine ever put in a pickup truck. i love my duramax and have been nothin but excellent, there is nothin smoother and better for bottom end then an inline. there are several residing in my family. the question to you is what due want out of the engine? towing hauling draggin or just alittle extra kick. and be aware that you have a great engine but if its an auto behind it, thats the biggest piece of junk on the market. the NV5600 is a great manual trans. also for general all around the edge/attitude is a great item this with an exhaust and intake should do you just fine for most things. upgrading your turbo may be a diffcult task because that is an electronic controlled waste gate workin with the ECM. Banks has something in the works but its going to be pricey.

i love all diesel engines and they all have their goods and bads. i operate and maintain diesel aboards ships that are just alittle bigger then these little high speed 4 stroke diesel we run in our trucks, try like 8,000hp @ 425 rpm's. every engine has its its goods and bads. i can't stand the when people make blind statements when they nothin next to nothin about what they are talkin about. all three engines duramax powerstroke and cummins are all excellent engines. the powerstroke is the only one with some quirks to still be worked out.

Well...help from 2 outa 4 ain't bad...Thanks guys...The dodge is definitely NOT going back...Especially since it has more balls than a Chevy or a Ford...The trans will definitely STAY where it is...There's nothing wrong with the Dodge automatic...There's nothing wrong with a Dodge...I'm not looking to beat the crap out of this truck like I see some people do...Just looking for some long term upgrades that will give my Cummins that extra kick and possibly drop a few jaws as well...Although drag racing is in my blood...The temptation is strong to rip this baby down the 1/4 mile...that's what my CHEVY drag car is for...Why beat up the tow vehicle? Right?...Rip out a few tree stumps, move a couple of houses...Maybe even pull a Ford or a Chevy out of the mud...Hey...Everyone has their opinion, their likes and dislikes, their favorites...I don't hate Fords or Chevy...Like dieselmaniac said "i can't stand when people make blind statements when they know next to nothin about what they are talkin about"...

Nothing wrong with the dodge automatic huh, I think I'll hear you singing to a different tune as soon as you put some good power to it, but then again, I own a duramax, what the hell do I know.......:confuzeld

i think it is now needed that i state that there is a 2003 dodge 3500 qquad cab 4x4 dually cummins 6-spd residing next to my duramax in the driveway. so i know what cummins is all about. there has been a 1993, 1995, 1997, 2001, and now the 2003 cummins in the driveway. its comepletely stock for now and used to pull a 16,000 fifth wheel trailer.

Some folks wear their feelings on their sleeves.
Anywho, it just seems funny that one would ask about upgrading a dodge in a chevy forum (The Diesel Place > Chevrolet & GMC Trucks > Power and Performance Upgrades
Upgrades )
that was all i was bringing up,
and IIRC, I don't remember anyone bashing the cummins diesel or diesels in general.
Just my .02 worth

Oh yes a Dodge auto is the terd of the world after a mild box. Trust me seen too many in the shops after a mild edge.

Now on with the help. You should get an intake, muffelorectomy, and a good convertor and valve body. Then get a small box and you will enjoy a long life of smiles.

For a correction, the Dodge tranny is not a "terd,":blahblah: the Dodge auto has

come a long way. Any make truck will need a tranny upgrade if you want to

depend on it to put some serious power to the ground. I also notice that most

of you DMax guys have upgraded tranny's also, none stock. Before you go and

do some serious upgrading (anything past exhaust and box) you might as well

upgrade your tranny because it will have to be done sooner or later. As far as

boxes go, TST can make your Cummins breath some fire,):h but without turbo

swap, tranny fix, injectors etc. you won't be able to use the TST box at it's

full power mode. Don't forget your gauges either, they are a must!!!!!

Just be careful because the power of a diesel can be very addictive and you'll start wanting more and more and more......

yes the new 48re is a better trans then 47re used before. the 47re is a junk pile and i went through 3 in 50,000 on my 97 dually cummins-almost stock just exhaust before moving up to a the 2001 with a 6spd. chevy went a got an already proven auto and ford built one from the ground up taking all the great features of the allison. dodge continues to put perfume on a pig instead of buidling something really good. the cummins is an excellent engine but the automatic limits it compared to chevy and ford

Most guys who are bashing the Dodge autos arent even aware that Dodge upgraded it for the mid 03 model yr.The 48Re is plenty strong ,will handle 400RWHP stock, about the same as an Ally.Overall the 48RE is plenty reliable, and as was mentioned big power mods will require trans mods no matter which brand you drive. From a few posts ive read here, theres still the LOUD Cummins engine complaints,(dodges have been as quiet or quieter than a dmax for 3 yrs now) from Dmax owners. Before bashing a product, its best to get your facts straight, and if you don't have a clue as to what your talking about dont be mad if you get called on it. Hired gun, ive never seen a 48RE take a dump from an Edge box, they only make 60hp.The juice hasnt been out long enough to get feedback yet unless you were a beta tester. But then again a Dmax Edge Hot juice/w attitude will limp an ally pretty easily too.On the older Dodge trucks an Edge comp box would destroy a 47RE,but hes got a new truck, and the 48Re,yet you post old info. Just so you guys know the pile of garbage 47RE in my truck has lived over 3 yrs at 600+RWHP /1200+ ft lbs torque ,towing, plowing and 60'000 miles of abuse.Yes i modded it,but its still the same basic trans as when new, this 47RE still snaps off shifts with tires peeping every time.As most Dodge guys know(90% of the mods we did to the 47RE'S are being done right from Chryler with the 48RE.

I have owned both gm and dodge diesels now. They all have there pluses and minuses. Hopefully an avid reader of the diesel place can get a good answer from a group who likes diesel's no matter which brand. Now if he was asking about a gasser I could understand....LOL

Well you can make a dodge tranny hold some power, its just going to cost ya some $$$$$ like everything else. Take apart an allison and a 47RE or 48RE and it dont take long to figure why we sell updated shafts for the dodge trannies and not the allisons. Matt

Well we have gotten way off topic on this one and many of us including myself are guilty. this new guy asks for some advice and we attack his truck cause its a dodge and its an auto. Dodge def has a bad rep on their transmission. thanks to these though things like high pressure valve bodies and triple disc converters were developed. if not then we would all be screwed when tryin to put big power down. i still 100% believe that the ally and torq**** are better trans then the 48re but is still a decent tranny and relativelty tough. I just think dodge needs to get a 5 speed auto to get rid of the wholes in the ratios and so there is a lower first gear. I love my 2003 stick cummins, with 4.10's and 5.71 creeper in low range nothin is going to stop it. i would have got a stick if i didn't like the ally some much. the cummins is the work truck, the gmc is a pleasure vechicle. also i have a buddy with the sickest cummins ever-1000hp+-its for sled pullin runs twin cat turbos 90psi and a 5200rpm cam good ole 12 valve-he has a unit from ats with an upgraded shaft and nary a problem with it in 2 years its nothin but hard time on it either. anyway i hope this settles things.
