After numerous hours of research , I have come to the conclusion that the HPCA advance mechanism in the top of my injection pump is not working properly , I have a tough time starting it when it's cold ( usually 4 tries ) and when it starts it idles rough with lot's of white smoke . As it warms up it idles and runs smooth with no smoke . I tried unplugging the the crank position sensor to see if that was working and it wouldn't start . The code that my truck kicks out is a 34 , ignition timing stepper motor fault . What else could this be ? I tried moving the injection pump more advanced and this changed nothing . Well it did make it start a little better , but it still just belches out white smoke and idles real rough until it warms up and then it runs fine . HELP !!!

HPCA on a '94?
Stepper motor's sometime stick, check to see if it is moving when you throttle it. It's located on the passengerside of the IP and the foot that moves in below it and can be seen with a flashlight. The timing doesn't advance if the stepper doesn't move.

Ok, I see it , how do you unstick it without damaging it . Thats a tight little space . It does look corrided on the spring and what looks like a little arm going down to the lever , which looks ramped or cammed , whatever shape you'd call that .

I got someone to give it throttle for me when it is running . That arm doesn't move up until after you are doing raising the RPM's . It reacts really slow . Any thoughts ?

Visual check is more to see whether it operates at all rather than how well it operates.
You can watch DES timing and compare it to ACT timing and see much more accurately how well the pump's advance is reacting.
Being yours is a '94, and the stepper motor functions, I would guess you need to re-set your TDC Offset, and you will need a scanner for that.
