Has anyone gotten the recall letter yet? If so, have you taken it in and had the test/repair done? I haven't received anything yet.

March 2005

Dear General Motors Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor

Vehicle Safety Act.

Reason For This Recall: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor

vehicle safety exists in certain 2004 model year Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick, 2004-

2005 model year Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban; GMC Savana, Sierra,

Yukon XL; and HUMMER H2 vehicles. On some of these vehicles, the hydraulic brake

booster’s pressure accumulator may crack and/or separate from the Hydro-Boost® assembly

during normal vehicle operating conditions. If a separation were to occur and the hood of the

vehicle were open, fragments from the accumulator could cause injury to people in the

immediate area. In addition, the presence of this crack or fractured surface could allow the

hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. The loss of fluid

would cause increased steering and braking effort.

What Will Be Done: Your GM dealer will inspect the hydraulic brake booster, and replace it if

necessary. This service will be performed for you at no charge.

How Long Will The Repair Take? This inspection will take approximately 20-40 minutes. If

the hydraulic brake booster requires replacement, an additional 1 hour will be required.

However, due to service scheduling requirements, your dealer may need your vehicle for a

longer period of time.

Contacting Your Dealer: To limit any possible inconvenience, we recommend that you

contact your dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for this repair. By

scheduling an appointment, your dealer can ensure that the necessary parts will be available

on your scheduled appointment date. Should your dealer be unable to schedule a service date

within a reasonable time, you should contact the appropriate Customer Assistance Center at

the listed number below. The Customer Assistance Center’s hours of operation are from 8:00

This sounds like they'll only replace it if it's broken... Can't this crack cause the brakes to fail? So they want to wait until it's broken and the truck ends up off a cliff because the brakes failed....

My understanding of the problem from previous bulletins is that the housing was machined wrong on some units. This causes a valve to stick which causes excessive pressure. This is what blows the accumulator. The dealer is going to have some sort of test device to be able to check if the unit has the problem or not. If it does, they change out the booster.

How do you know if your vehicle is affected or not? I was just at the dealer and they said my 2004 GMC Sierra 2500HD Duramax was not one of the ones affected by the recall? Are there certain ones not affected??

GMCSID ... Thanks a bunch for posting the Chevy numbers.

After seeing your first post of the recall letter, I called the Chevy 800 number to see if my truck was included. It was made in April, 2004, and that was in the date range listed in the original announcement (2/04 - 8/04(my model)). I gave the rep my VIN number and the GM recall number (05006). After a couple of minutes, he came back on the line and said my truck was NOT part of the recall.

The last part of my VIN is 4E328xxx. Sure looks like it falls in the 4E261349 - 4E403748 range to me.

The lesson appears to be that just because you have not received a letter yet or your truck shows up as no outstanding recalls on the GM inquiry screen, it does not mean you are home free. It appears that it is taking GM a while to update the records on the computer for the individual VIN numbers. I wonder if they are staging the recall like they did with the tailgate straps.

For the past year my truck after high speed driving for 30 or more miles will start making a whining noise from the hyraboost. I can change the pitch by moving the steering wheel and the whine gets louder by depressing brake pedal. Symptoms go away after good cooldown. My vin is 4F143931 and doesn't seem to fall under this recall.

Is there any update to the recall? My VIN falls in the 4F185636 ~ 4F269038 range (4F232XXX), but the dealer says there are NO recalls on my truck... does anyone have a copy of the recall with the VIN range on it?

I have never gotten the letter, but when I went to the dealer he said the VIN qualified for the recall.

Tim,
That exhaust rocks! :ro)
Wish I could do it to mine, but business precludes it. Hmmmm, do they make a cutout for big pipes?):h
