Helping a buddy who bought a 83 6.2 that's been sitting. Ran when parked. I know nothing on this engine. Any primer? Can anyone give me the run down on getting it started? Thanks in advance.

Mine sat for 10 years.
Check the oil and antifreeze. I use Shell Rotella SB 0w40 when its cold.
Make sure you have good batteries and that the electrical lines are on the glow plugs.
Take the rubber hose off the front of the injection pump. Use compressed air and pressurize the fuel system. After a little bit fuel should come out of the top of the pump. Wait till it has no air in it. Re attach the return line.
Make sure batteries are fully charged and crank. Pedal to the floor. It will take a bit of cranking to bleed the injector lines but they will self bleed and it should fire and run.
If that doesn't work you have some trouble shooting ahead of you and lots of friends on here for advice.

Do not use ether!

Is there something I need to open on top of the pump? Bleeder vavle or something? Can I spray mist diesel fuel into the intake? Thanks.

I would also dump in some Power service or other fuel additive, and don't forget to change the fuel filter.

Spraying diesel mist down the intake is usually ineffective. A good, clean, tight, fuel system, with fully charged batteries will usually do the job. When priming a 6.2 (they are described as "self priming") it's important to remember that starter, battery and electrical connections need to be good, clean and tight. Many problems are related to just simple battery cable connections.

When cranking, do it in 10 - 15 second bursts, wait a few minutes between crank cycles to cool the starter. They generate a lot of heat and damage from over-cranking will result. Putting a slight positive pressure in the fuel tank, through the fill cap and opening the bleed screw on the top of the filter housing will remove enough air from the system to allow self priming. If often takes an hour or more to start a 6.2 that has a dry fuel system if care is given to cooling the starter and removing most of the air as described.

Keep us posted.

Given the current temperatures around the country, It might also be beneficial to check the glow plugs. In this weather, No Glow Plugs = No Start

This weather is good for battery sales too!
