: A/C Compressor Support Bracket
bluebug 01-15-2009, 11:27 AM I found a junk gasser with A/C that has no compreesor. I am salvaging all of the other components and installing them into my '85 with a 6.2L. I have the heater core and internal plenum installed already. The duct work is almost done. I will be putting in the evaporater and condenser this weekend.
Does anyone know where I may aquire the compressor mount brackets for a 6.2L?
Clark
which one do you need, i have 2 different styles. one is from a 82 and one is for a 89.
bluebug 01-16-2009, 08:59 AM I would assume the one from the 89. But what is the difference between the two?
My truck is a 85 C20 that is a Custom Deluxe with no extras.
Thanks,
Clark
Jodean 01-16-2009, 09:16 AM isnt the 89 serpentine??
Diaric 01-16-2009, 10:58 AM two different brackets available as the compressor came in 2 lengths. my 84 had a long compressor and 87 had a shorter one. this pic is of bracket for long one, extra offset on bracket for the short one. the front bracket also has a slightly different offset

bluebug 01-16-2009, 11:17 AM The truck has no original compressor. Other than the 89 maybe being serpentine, would it matter which compressor I use? I will have to purchase one either way I go. Could I get one of the short compressors with a v-belt clutch?
I live in Georgia and would like to drive my truck more in the summer.

Diaric 01-16-2009, 11:29 AM not sure if serpentine compressor turns the right way, that would need to be checked. the serpentine setup also had the ac on the oposite side, mounted where the altenator is on yours,so those brackets won't do you much good, but check further, not all 89's used a serpentine setup. get whatever set of brackets then you can get the compressor to match
High Sierra 2500 01-16-2009, 12:31 PM You can get the short compressor with the V-belt drive, but I think you will have to get it from another application... I know the Chevy Caprice/other fullsize GM cars of the '80s used that compressor.
bluebug 01-18-2009, 09:13 PM So, it does not matter which one I get as long as I get the compressor to match it.
JKC, How much do you want for them?
bluebug 01-24-2009, 06:43 PM Does anyone else have one or know where one could be found?
Clark
i have not checked to see if i have all of them yet. i will do that tommorow.
My 89 has v-belts and yes it has is made for a shorter compressor.
i used the long compressor on my truck because i had a new long style compressor and my short compressor was worn out.
i think i have all the brackets for the long setup.
bluebug 01-31-2009, 08:20 PM JKC, have you had a chance to look yet?
I have gotten all the other compnents installed except the compressor and hoses.
I had to order a vacuum pump, as my truck has 4speed in it, and did not come with one of those either.

bluebug 02-01-2009, 08:26 PM JKC, any luck yet?
If I can not get a bracket for my 6.2, is it a possibility to put a surpentine system from a 93 6.5 onto my 6.2?
I found a guy that has a bad 6.5 that is planning a gasser conversion. He will sell me everything but the power steering pump and alternator.

I probably have them, but I'm not sure which compressor you're using. All my 82, 83 and 84 6.2 trucks have the big A6 compressors, and my 86's and newer all have the small HR6 compressors. I don't have any 85s.
If you have your choice of compressors, the smaller HR6 units seem to handle the R134A refrigerant better. They are also easier to find in junkyard, many four-cylinder GM cars use the same units.
jdemaris 02-01-2009, 08:57 PM I have gotten all the other compnents installed except the compressor and hoses.
If you get looking for v-belt drive compressors, keep in mind there are three totally different types used by GM in the 80s for trucks, Blazers, etc. 6.2s use the big A6 or smaller HR6, both cylindrical shaped. Gas engines e.g. 305s and 350s usually use the A4 which is shaped more like an alterntor and very short and big around.
bluebug 02-02-2009, 07:53 PM jdemaris,
I do not have a compressor for my truck. I am cannablizing a dead gasser for all of the A/C components except the compressor and hoses. The gasser did not have a compressor or brackets installed.
So whichever brackets I can get, I will buy a compressor and hoses to fit.
Thanks,
Clark

Most of the V8 gas engines are going to have the A4 compressors and brackets which will not do you any good. A4 is a totally different shape than the other two compressors used in 6.2 diesels.
bluebug 02-05-2009, 06:47 AM There were no brackets on the gasser anyway. I need some brackets for my 6.2
I will take what ever brackets I can get and purchase what ever compressor matches those brackets.
Do you have a set I can get from you?

Yes, I have several parts vehicles with 6.2s and AC. I'm not going to strip any parts this time of year though - it was 18 F below zero this morning.
Out in the field I've got an 86 Blazer and two 83 Blazers - all with 6.2s and AC. I'll take a look in my shop tonight or tomorrow though and see if I have a set of brackets laying around. I stripped an 88 Suburban last year with a 6.2 and AC and I think most of the engine parts are in a pile somewhere inside.
What are planning on using for a bottom pulley? Do you have the AC pulley with the extra groove? Even if you have the steel pulley with the extra groove, you might discover you want the 1985 and newer rubber-shock-mounted pulley. It works much better with AC and keeps the belt from slipping and slapping.
bluebug 02-06-2009, 09:09 PM I have not thought of what to do about a bottom pulley. Thanks for bringing that up. My truck's lower pulley has two grooves in it, one for thr Alt and water pump and one for the power steering pump and the water pump.
The power steering pump has two grooves in it though, one that has the drive v-belt in it and the second groove is empty.
If you have a balancer pulley and a water pump pulley and you can send them as well, that would be great.
Thanks,
Clark
