: Fuel Filter, Cold weather & fuel filter life in DIC
Kejsj30 01-15-2009, 09:03 AM Does anybody know how the fuel filter life in the DIC is computed? I've read on here that it is a tabulation of miles driven, gallons used etc., (basically that it can't tell if filter is plugged).
I've been having issues with truck going into limp mode 1st time on 12/20.......replaced the fuel filter and things are good. The next time on 1/12..........relocated the MAP sensor closer to the firewall because it was freezing up. 3rd time now was this morning 1/15.
The weird thing is that the fuel filter went from 90+% down to 0% and is displaying a message in the DIC to "change fuel filter". It seems to be giving signs of gelling up this time due to RPMs fluctuating up and down and spitting and sputtering.
If there is nothing to read the condition of the filter why does the DIC show 0% life left on the filter when I have traveled around 1,000 miles if that?
RaceDUCATI 01-15-2009, 10:54 AM I don't have a solution, but I can tell you why the filter life went from over 90% to 0% instantly.
Thats the same problem I have when the temps drop below zero. The pressure sensor in the fuel rail determines the fuel pressure is low and puts the truck in limp mode, changes the fuel filter life indicator to zero and displays the "Change Fuel Filter" message in the DIC. If you cut the filter apart, the pleats will have a wax buildup even though fuel pours easily out of the filter and doesn't seem gelled.
Good luck.
Kejsj30 01-15-2009, 10:57 AM Sounds like I have the same problem as you. Have they come to any solution on yours. I'm having mine towed today as I can't keep it running to drive it in limp mode like I've done the other two times.
seedguy 01-15-2009, 06:26 PM Mine went to 95% to 0% in a matter of seconds this morning, however, truck ran fine for the next mile before I got it inside.
Outside temp read -29F (the other truck I drove after that said the same).
Later this afternoon, I got some PS 911 and kept the truck plugged in during the day. I started the truck, reset the filter life indicator and drove it back home without issue.
It was -15F when I drove it back home 10 miles. If this winter weather keeps up, I will have to buy a gasser for daily driving, ridiculous. I had to borrow a friends GMC gasser to go to a meeting today. Semis being towed all over.
Where is Al Gore now? I bet he's not driving a diesel in the midwest this week.

Hes in the Whitehouse with Obama thinking of new lies to tell us and F/up our cars and trucks
T.Myers 01-15-2009, 08:13 PM GM didn't test the LMM in COLD weather!!!!!!! I'm tired of this shit! It's not the fuel or the filter it is some sensor. Mine limped twice today, but once it warms all the way up then shut off for 5 min it is fine.:sheephump:nutkick::rant:
dirtymax08 01-15-2009, 08:24 PM Sounds like I'm glad I live in good ole Kentucky!!! We are just now getting into single digits and tonight it is "suppose" to get down to 0..
Newguy 01-15-2009, 11:49 PM Mine has been having issues.... went to the GM dealer today, and they wanted $300+ to change the fuel filter!! I bought one for $30.
**yawn** this truck is a bummer compared to my 06 LBZ for cold weather performance!

same problem and waiting for another tow!:D
Bad fuel my you know what.
My truck will idle fine, sit their with the elevated idle at 1,000 RPM but, when you try to drive it it wants to die. If I had bad fuel would the truck idle fine like that.
It seems to idle and will run for a 1/4 or so then spit, sputter, and die.

Too bad. I live in Kentucky, also. Further south than you. My 2008 LMM did this back in November.
Filter went from 75% to 0% instantly. Truck went to limp mode. I was pulling about 20K in very hilly country. Picked a great time to limp on me.
I shut it down for about 20 minutes. Truck stopped limping. Never had another problem. Never changed the filter. Did add PowerService.
Temp outside when this happened was about 25F.
