I'm getting ready to make a 1500 mile trip and I want to pull the drums and inspect the brakes and bearings to be sure I'm not going to have problems 700 miles into my trip. The last trip I made was almost a year ago in some serious salt and slush. I'm afraid there is some serious corrosion that may cause me some grief.

Does anyone know where I can get some decent DIY info on how to service the brakes and bearings on these axles?

The camper is a Crossroads Seville with dual 7000 lb axles that have drum brakes. I don't have enough gumption to crawl under the camper in 10 degree weather to see what the brand name is.

Check out this link. Hopefully it's a similar set up.

That link is exactly what I was looking for, I kinda figured the wheel bearings were like most 2wd front wheel bearings. The procedure for tightening them is exactly like my 84' monte. The brakes look just like any common drum brake setup except their activated by the magnet on a lever instead of a hydraulic cylinder.

LMM Guy,

Look at this website http://www.trailerpart.com/ , you can purchase a new backing plate with new brakes and magnets for a reasonable price. Plus it is easy to change. Just trying to give you another option.

Its important to know what you have for hubs.Dexter reccomends replacing the seals on their EZ-LUBE hubs if removed although I have never had mine tore down to verify this.EZ-LUBES have a grease fitting.Other than that removing, inspecting and repacking very simple.

Do yourself a favor and purchase one extra inner and outer set of bearings w/races, seal & new cotter pin. Pack them and wrap them up in waxed paper and keep them in a zip-lock bag. In the event that you do have a problem, it is usually not a problem to find someone to replace them but sometimes impossible to locate the new parts. I always carry a set in my camper.
