I have an 82 6.2. I pulled the top steel plug off my oil pump drive/vacuum pump and there is oil up there.
I know another guy with the same unit that doesn't even have a plug on top and it is completely dry up there.

Is this normal?, Is there a shaft seal that's supposed to keep the oil out or restrict it?, or his unit faulty and plugged?, or is there a difference in the units depending on the year even though they look the same externally?
Common sense tells me there should be oil up there.

Has anyone pulled theirs apart?

I no longer need the vacuum portion on my drive. I plugged the hole on the side and made a tach pickup for the top

I seem to be getting full oil pressure up there. So much so the seal I put in the top has blown off three times because of the oil pressure. I reduced the size of the oil pressure feed hole at the bottom. Took longer, but seal still blew out. Now I completely plugged the hole.

I know gasser distributers don't have a hole at the bottom and aren't oil pressure lubed, and I see this other guys that doesn't get any oil at the top, I'm kind of curious if I can get by with my oil feed hole plugged on mine. I'm worried ubout bushing failure. I guess I could put a zerk fitting on the shaft housing between the bushings and pump it full of grease.

Yes there is supposed to be oil up there, it is pressure fed. There are quite a few different versions of oil pump drives, some are the same as the vacuum pump drive, minus the vacuum pump others are simply a stub that sits almost flush with the top of the block. I lost an engine one time after removing my vacuum pump pod and blocking it off with a plug in attemp to save some hp. The plug blew out while cruising the interstate in the middle of Nevada and next thing I knew, no oil pressure! Got her shut off quick and refilled with oil but it was too late. Spun a rod bearing, but I drove it tell the rod came out the side of the block):h expensive tow! another lesson learned! Thank goodness that was over 10 years ago and my memory is fading!:D
