took my 2003 in about a month ago with 138000 to get head gaskets replaced dealer called me the other day said they had the motor put back together and it was still doing the same thing as it did when i took it in. They looked into things further and found that the #7 hole is where the antifreeze was getting into the motor. Went in to talk to the Service manager and they are pretty sure the block is cracked. He told me that he was going to call his GM rep and wanted to see if GM would do anything 4 me. Got a call later that day and GM is going to do a policy adjustment witch means they are going to split the cost of a new motor with me. So iam going to come out way a head. iam gona pay the same or maybe a little more for a new motor as i was for just head gaskets.

Have any of you had a block cracked?

I have never heard of it either. Anything is possible of course, but it "basically" never happens on a duramax.

Chris, it's an '03? Did you buy the extended warranty, or are they just really nice folks?:D I just bought an '03 with 34K & spent $1,900 on a 48/48 warranty.

Sound like a problem related to a block freezing? Thats all I can come up with.

I had a cracked block @ 105k which was fully covered by the dealer. After Dye,chasing inj. cups three times, thermostat gaskets twice, I convinced the dealer it was time to take it apart. #2 cylinder cracked half way around the bore about 3/4 in. from the bottom and then split all the way to the top. You didn't need the dye to see it either. Bad part is their mechanic didn't see it. I did. Stopped by to see if the bores had been washed down since this "chasing our tail game went on for 9k. They were just gonna do head gaskets and ship it. The final word from GM was bad casting. Few and far in between but does happen.

sounds like a great dealer, that is good that they would do that for you!! alot of dealers would not have done that for you!!

i heard of a 01 duramax basically desentagrating the internals, and blowing one surviving but twisted rod out the hood!

IIRC when they first came out there were some casting porousity issues. If so, they can have cracks also.

I've heard of it once before. I believe it stemed from a bad Head Gasket. Coolant was getting into the oil for a while which caused the mains to wear prematurely then it became a little out of wack and cracked the block

I have heard of a cracked block. My buddy is a 15 year gm tech and a diesel guy. he says it rare indeed.

sounds like a very sweet deal to me...I also have not heard of GM doing that kind of warranty but very good deal for you.
