: What is the quietest turbo (downpipe) back exhaust?
Highmark 04-01-2005, 07:55 AM I've been seaching and reading a lot about exhausts and I am ready to take the plunge but I really want to know whose has the most quiet system that still has a nice reduction in EGT's. I know some websites you can hear clips of the sound but that really is no indication of in the cab noise. Do any of them have before/after decibel readings?
B-rad 04-01-2005, 10:02 AM i have always heard the banks is really quiet. heard one just 2-3 weeks ago on a LB7 and it really just sounded good. not too loud at all.i'm betting its really quiet on a LLY
hdmax 04-01-2005, 10:21 AM The Banks is not quiet by any means. It is quieter then some, but no way is it quiet.
I was not aware that Banks had the down pipe from the turbo back. The one I have, starts once the pipe levels out at the end of the down pipe.
On a side note, if you live in an area where salt is used for winter time weather. The Banks will rust in the first winter. And after 3 winters, you will think the exhaust was 20 years old. Mine is 90% covered in rust. The stainless tip is the only part that is not covered in rust, I mean, everything is completely rusted. :help: :help:
Diesel Tech 04-01-2005, 11:38 AM I believe if you check around you will find our exhaust kit is the quietest on the market. It is a catback exhaust. We also have a replacement for the front pipe if you need it. The Exhaust pipes are 4" SS with a polished 5" tip. Give our web site a visit and you can see the system there or give us a call.
BH in AZ 04-02-2005, 02:05 AM Steve ... Since you take the effort to completely test your products, I was wondering if you have any decibel numbers you can share that compare the original factory exhaust to the TTS exhuast system on an LLY. I am especially interested in any noise levels/drone when towing a load uphill.
Highmark ... There have been several postings over the last year stating that the TTS system is quiet. Do a search on TTS exhuast.
Diesel Tech 04-02-2005, 12:18 PM Using a Extend cab with a trailer load to a combine weight of 18,270 up Baker grade on the way to Las Vegas 65mph windows up A/C on Radio off reading taken at drive ear level center of front seat no measurable change from before and after tests.
McRat 04-02-2005, 12:23 PM Been in a couple of TTS exhaust trucks so far, and if you are looking for quiet, the TTS is pretty quiet. I'm not sure if any system is quieter that I've heard.
Personally, I like loud. :D
How bout documented EGT reductions??

Thanks Steve, that is what I wanted to hear (or should I say not hear)! Sorry McRat, but I like listening to the mechanical engine sounds rather than the exhaust notes.

The reason your exhaust is rusted is because it is made completely out of 409 ss. 409 does corrode, but once the pipe is completely covered in corrosion, the corrosion just about comes to a stop, so don't try to sand the rust off. 409 ss is relatively cheap in cost compared to 304 ss, but it can handle much higher temps. The extreme heating and cooling of the exhaust could crack 304 pipe, especially up near the turbo. btw your tip is made of 304, that's why it looks so nice.
max camper 04-03-2005, 02:22 PM I had banks, tried with and with out front pipe. It was good around town empty but towing was way too loud for me, so it's gone.
TheBac 04-03-2005, 05:04 PM Rust is a fact of life if you live in the North. My MBRP 409 is all spotted up, but rust doesn't affect how it works.
The most quiet exhaust you'll find is the stock one.
brett6.6 04-04-2005, 07:54 AM hey my brother has the magna flow turbo back and it is a lot quiter than others that ive heard. i think you can hear it at magnaflow.com
BlueDMax 04-04-2005, 01:51 PM So what makes the TTS exhaust system quieter then say Banks or MBPR systems. Is the TTS muffler not a straight thru design?
Diesel Tech 04-04-2005, 01:57 PM How bout documented EGT reductions??
I do not know what you mean by documented? Documented to me means being able to control before and after conditions to the same exact thing which we are unable to do. What I can say is in like conditions we see a 75 - 125 deg. drop in EGT's. If you have a truck with cat or one without a cat there are differences. The thing that keeps our system quite is our design in the muffler and as anyone that has one can tell you it's quite larger when campared to others in the market.

How does this compare to others on the market? I am mainly after some quiet EGT reduction. Any performance gains are obviously an added bonus.
Diesel Tech 04-04-2005, 04:46 PM Allthough we have not tested other manufactures my guess would be we are all pretty close to the same EGT drops, so the difference is truely the noise level or lack there of and fit & finish of the system.
Highmark 04-04-2005, 07:35 PM Any loss in ground clearance with the TTS system?
Diesel Tech 04-05-2005, 11:59 AM No, our exhaust is higher than the stock unit. In the lowest spot our exhaust sits level with the bottom of the frame where the stock unit hangs below the frame rail.
