Hi,

I have a 1998 GMC 3500 truck with a 6.5 litre Turbo Diesel.
Is there any way to increase it's power without spending any money, just by adjusting or tweeking something????:thumb:

Thanks

Some folks here could tell you how to Turn up the boost and fool the computer, real cheap. You could bump the optic sensor for free, its easy, but the only catch there is that it's trial and error because your range of motion is less than 1mm. That's about all I know that will give you something for nothing.

ThanksJon welcome to the site bear with me rant coming on not directed at you personally

I recieved a PM earlier for being a little short with another new to the site, so I'll try to explain this so you will understand I'm not trying to be an A$$. Please take some time to visit the welcome note & FAQs locked in sticky threads above.

Members here have tried hard to keep this from being like the other sites, where post after post when a new guy shows how do I do X or Y, same questions & questions make it boring, the questions do have merit mind you, & we were all new at this once, I asked many of the same questions once myself and wished there had been a FAQ list to reference, so no question is a dumb one, but please do a little homework especially when it is an open book test.

I went to significant effort to make the FAQs as user friendly as possible, please try it 1st, you didn't know so I can't fault that either so again bear with my rant a little longer.

Run through the welcome notes and see how to update your sig, that is the 1st thing for you to do; for us to be able to help you, each different configuration has a little different twist to the best answer. If you are truly new to GM 6.5 some of the answers we give won't make sense until you understand basics.

Which is why I emplore people to take a couple of days to read where others have gone before in FAQs, then if you still have questions I & others are more than happy to help out, that's all, I'm not trying to be an A$$.

You can help us also by breaking each question into 1 post, your question & our answer can be someone elses also; that can become part of the FAQs, if you shotgun us with a laundry list, the thread gets bogged down, multi subject so using the search engine later is hampered. Mutlti questions with multi answers in a single post is tough to manage.

Be direct as possible, if you don't know exactly how to express the question, draft question as best you can with as much info surrounding your querry, direct questions are much easier to answer, and will allow us to use it as a learning springboard for others later in form of a FAQ.

Rant over

Again not directed at anyone in particular just airing some frustration, you guys that have been around a while I'd appreciate some help here and gentle nudging when needed to the sticky threads.

WELCOME JON!!!!!

There are alot of good folks here so heed Turbine Doc advice and C'mon back in few days and we can go from there. For us old hands is gets a bit redundant.

In general power improvemts usally cost something. These trucks after 1993 are computer controled and drive by wire we can not even adjust the idle on them and there isn't even a thoattle cable or link all electronics.

what effect will bumping the optic sensor have on fuel economy??

IF an engine is burning it's fuel effciently if you increase pwoer you increase fuel use thats where the HP comes from.

so does this mean that when you advance the timing (bump) you are also increasing the duration of time over which fuel is delivered, thus delivering more fuel and ruining your fuel economy??

JOI do me a favor ask again in a independent thread, this is a topic that needs it's own thread as answer could get detaled & very Informative and I would like it to be easily found with the search engine.

Thanks I can seem to only move the whole thread.

The optic bump, if done as prescribed, moderately, will improve fuel economy provided you resist the temptation known as 'lead-foot'. Your injection timing will be slightly advanced, overcoming the factory setup that is slightly retarded to lower NOx in the exhaust to make the EPA happy.
