: Fuel Mileage with PPE!
N2RacingLS1s 01-07-2009, 07:50 AM Just took a trip with the 2007 Classic 4X4 Crew Cab 2500 HD Max and we got 20.5 MPG hard calculation at 70 MPH's 95% of the time in a 410 mile trip.
This is with the PPE factory air box mod and a PPE programmer set on Tow mode 90 HP.
I am thinking about setting it to the 120 HP setting to see if the MPG will improve! I am very happy with the results. The computer said it was getting 22.3 MPH Avg., but I knew that was not correct!
All I know is the truck went 410 miles on 19.99 gals. which I think is great for such a big truck! I know I tried the 40 HP setting and it got worse fuel mileage on another trip before.
Any thoughts?

UW153 01-07-2009, 08:08 AM 20.5 mpg this time of year! Pretty damn good. I can maybe get 17 on the highway if I'm nice with the Predator at 65. I've tried the 85 setting but the mileage didn't improve.
nitroracer1980 01-07-2009, 11:28 AM im getting 26 highway and 20.5 city towing 15 with PPE on level 3 hot + 2 e.t.
N2RacingLS1s 01-07-2009, 01:01 PM Well I guess I will bump it up to level 3 sounds good! I am sure it will not get as good as yours since I have no other mods. I will like to see 23 MPG that would be just fine!
Thanks,

badbowtie169 01-07-2009, 06:39 PM i dont think you will see any major improvements with lvl 3 i am getting better mil3age with lvl 2. and it's nicer on the tranny
N2RacingLS1s 01-07-2009, 07:32 PM Well I will let you all know what happens!
I have to make the same exact drive in a few days and since the truck is just going to carry itself down the road at 70 MPH how hard can it be on the transmission anyway!
I will save it to level 3 from level 2 and see what it will do!
I forgot to metion this is on a fuel filter with 11K miles on it showing 19% on the computer.

nitroracer1980 01-07-2009, 07:50 PM just keep your foot out of it and you will be fine in winter mix i lost about 3 to 5 mpg. just to let you know.
socal2ks 01-07-2009, 08:52 PM I concur!
My best hand was in the 24mpg range. It was amazing to see 500+ miles till empty.
TIM Z 01-07-2009, 09:03 PM Great milage! PPE makes a great running/ Great MPG tune.
You sure that badass T/A wasnt pushing you?:D

I agree on PPE it seems to be working great! It just amazes me that you can turn up the power and it get better fuel mileage.
My Formula does run good 10.72 NA in the 1/4 at 124+ MPH but everytime I have it behind the Max it hurts the mileage for sure!

TIM Z 01-07-2009, 09:43 PM Wow 10's are Fricken gettin it! Man i love those LS engines.
I miss my old cammed/turboed 5.3. Next vehicle is going to have a Gen III in it!
Are you running a 5.7 or a 6.0 ? Whats done to it?
N2RacingLS1s 01-07-2009, 10:25 PM Thanks! It has the 346 CI with heads/cam and other boltons. It has been a fun car to build. I have been building it now for five years.

With the current setup the truck gets 13.0 to 13.5 pulling a 24 enclosed with the 3,150 lb. car, generator, and 450 lb. 4 wheeler.
I usually pull around 65 MPH as well! I guess the trailer, car, and all the stuff to be around 7,800 lbs.

I had one tank do that and it was with the Edge J/A on lvl 6. I now have EFI live and made my own tune using several of the tunes I had and can get 20-21 doing 70mph 75mph drops it to 19mpg. I haven't noticed a difference with winter fuel.
the best i have noticed with mine was 19.1 hand calculated on a 117 mile trip. ppe set on 90 horse setting. made the same trip pulling a 22ft camper and ppe on 40 horse setting. wind was blowing really really hard most of the way, drove 50 to 60 got 9.3 hand calculated. didnt notice any increase when on same trip with level 3 160 horse. i also have 285/70/17's on the truck.

Mine got those numbers at first and then dropped to about 16 mpg on the 90hp tune. still havent figured out why. Hope your good mpgs continue, keep us updated, fill out your sig. so we know what we are looking at.
haywire4130 01-09-2009, 01:32 AM mox- is that a deer or a greyhound from behind in your pic? sorry for the off-topic-

Well, I know one thing the truck gets even worse mileage on the 40 HP tune. It does seem a little strange that your truck is getting worse fuel mileage.
I have had this tune in the truck for over 6 months now and 10K miles! Maybe I will just leave it alone for now and not take a chance on missing up a good thing!!
I tried to update the sig. does not seem to work! I will try it again.

Deer, breakin off a piece:eek:
BKDespain 01-09-2009, 02:02 PM I get the best on 2 1 and 3 get me worse than stock. I haven't tried 4. Lost almost 3 mpg with winter blend also.
coopracing 01-09-2009, 08:41 PM I just changed from a Predator to the PPE. I could easily get 21 to 22 or so on the 120 setting on the highway with the Predator. I don't have much time on the PPE, but I have only been able to get about 17 to 18 on the highway running 65 or so. This is on level three, guess I will try level 4.
Hellrazr78 01-09-2009, 08:59 PM 13.3 with mine. City. Driving me crazy. Of course I have it set on Level 4. But still. Could a dirty air filter kill MPG that bad? I really need to get rid of this K&N.
DIESEL FIT HER 01-09-2009, 09:14 PM Just put it on a few weeks ago. Been on level 3 and I'm getting 18 to 19 tops. Was getting 20 before I put it on.

Go to level 2.
N2RacingLS1s 01-10-2009, 05:41 AM This is some good information! It sounds like level 2 is the place to be which is what I have the PPE set on now.
I have decided on the trip I am taking Sunday that I may slow down to 65 and see if I can improve on the 20.5. I am happy with what it got, but I just wanted to see if I could get some more out of it.

yes you need to get rid of the K&N do to there not a diesel air filter. go to AFE or S&B there better for diesel motors.
Hellrazr78 01-10-2009, 09:10 PM yeah I know K&N isnt a good filter. I didnt install it. It was on there when I bought it. Now i'm struggling to find a stock filter replacement. I bought and installed the stock system back on my truck and now I need a filter. Trucks down and my options are low.
nitroracer1980 01-10-2009, 10:21 PM i would go with after market like AFE filters or S&B filter. look for a sealed system for the milage and hp that would be your great way to go.
N2RacingLS1s 01-11-2009, 08:13 PM Well guys just got back from my trip and the truck did real good. It produced a 20.3 MPG even though we drove 65 MPH instead of 70 MPH. However it rained several miles of the trip and the wind was blowing in some cases around 20 - 30 MPH's most of it was either a headwind or sidewide from the front of the truck.
This was on a filter with 12K miles of fuel through it and the computer shows the filter is 85% used up. I will be changing the filter this week.

socal2ks 01-11-2009, 08:28 PM Wind is a huge factor for me out here in kansas, sometimes I see 13mpg into the wind.
N2RacingLS1s 01-11-2009, 08:46 PM I remeber getting caught in a wind in IL. pulling my boat with one of my old gas trucks that was no fun. The wind took the gas mileage down to 8.5 MPG. It usually got around 12.5 to 13 MPG.

Land Crusher 04-04-2009, 07:40 PM PPE on 90hp on trip from seattle wash to wichita ks
best results 18.6 on computer while doing close to 85mph
thrue the rockie moutains. Worst 14.9 on flatlands with a head wind
in Kansas. I beleve it has a lot to do with the quality of the fuel.

In the winter I can usually average 20mpg avg traveling from CA to KS.
Summer is 22-23, so I agree the winter blend sucks which im sure is still being used.
TxChristopher 04-05-2009, 11:13 AM I guess none of you understand that the tuner is changing the expected fuel rates that the DIC uses to calculate fuel mileage. The larger the tune the further off the DIC will be. I have had the DIC read 45 MPG with a big enough tune in there, but was I actually getting 45 mpg? Uh, no.
Try measuring actual gallons at the pump versus mileage, see how that works out against your big tuner mileage. ;)

If that is directed to me, My DIC says about 24.5-25, hand calcd is what I posted.
I run from CA to KS at least 6 times a year, and have writen on the back of the receipts. I also check my GPS miles traveled vs my trip odo.
Granted this is all @70-75 mph, and of course when its blowing the wrong way you will see 15mpg or worse.
Big Fred 04-05-2009, 01:27 PM The best I have ever got was 22.5mpg with on a 150 mile trip running 55-60mph, PPE programmer was on level 6 and I had my H2's w/Pro Comps.
3cylinder 04-05-2009, 02:17 PM I beleve it has a lot to do with the quality of the fuel.

camozuki 04-05-2009, 07:09 PM The only way I can see someone getting above a true 18 mpg in a CCSB 4x4 is if they drive with the cruise on at 55 mph in a straight flat line.
dblume 04-05-2009, 10:06 PM Mine is a 2007 stock 4x4 CC 2500 with 20,000 miles. I hand calculate evey tank filled to the top of the filler neck. Highway driving at 70 I have seen several tanks at 18 and 18.5 mpg. One tank was 19mpg. I'm thrilled with my millage. My old truck a 03 Ford 4x4 F250 CC averaged about 14 mpg.

x2 I guess we're the only ones getting crappy mileage
